Trying to decide if I'm going to set for coon this year. Last few years got between $8 to $13 for 2xl-4xl finished coon even when all the reports said they wouldn't do that well . Reading a lot in the magazines that coon is going to be near unsalable this year, any predictions for coon skins this year ? Worth the trouble or focus on coyotes and beaver ? -Thanks

Lots of guys are focusing on other species, sounds like. Coon are facing a tough market with a tough grade. I think they will be sellable, but not by much.

Talked to my fur buyer the other day. His advice was wait until November to start but call before setting to see what prices will look like.

Coons will be the ticket this season. Don't worry about the million or so in storage. The demand is so high those will sell any day. I suggest if you have a job to quit and focus all your time and money on catching as many as you can. Buy and put together a walk-in freezer so you wont need to take time out for fur put up till the season ends.

I think unless you want to burn some personal records just to burn them I'd be looking elsewhere. I'm going trapping. They won't be let out how many will ride in the truck is yet to be determined.

Buying and the price paid can be two very different discussions. grin

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

There is no market. Guess I can see trapping a few . Focusing on them or trying to trap big numbers is just plain foolish IMO. Reading between the lines it seems to me a three dollar average for 3x and up rest out seems realistic. If your gas was free I doubt you could still make a profit trapping coon sad to say.

There was no real market this last winter and then the China bug came. Like Wade said if you are into killing to lose money , I guess you could set records. I know I will not be anyone's competition this year. I will not be in a pair of hip boots this season. Have as much fun as you can afford. LLL

. Numbers mean very little with no market or competition. Hopefully in a year or two it will get better and a guy can at least make a wage trapping coon. Then you can get the combine out again

Like you Paul I have nothing to prove. If I could get it to pay I would do it. The mink and rats that I used to pay gas with are worthless as well though. The Combine will be fishing and deer hunting this fall. It will pay the same and I prefer venison and walleyes to coon on the table.

Another thing to consider is the 160,000 coon still at FHA. GFW is running two routes this year through the coon belt. Once right before Christmas and then a cleanup route I believe to be after the first of the year. If you are planning on trapping many coon you better have the freezers to store them or the time to finish them. You will give carcass coon away this year IF they will take them at all. The fat lady has finally sung in my opinion. LLL

I used to say that when fur is cheap you have to catch more to make the same money......I'm too old to do that now...

I would be shocked if they took any carcass coon this year. By the time they paid a skinner wouldnt be much left for scraping and drying costs yet.

No time to post on the forums I got traps to get ready. I can't wait to cash in big time in the spring. Thank you so much danny !!!!!!

Mike, we can turn my old barn into a giant walk in freezer and rig up a conveyor to drop them in the top and we can just fill it up and never have to open the door. Then when the price goes through the roof because everyone else quit trapping them, we will ship a whole barn full to the highest bidder. You will be able to retire for sure after we split the profits!! grin

coon were so thick here in the spring thinking about hanging a shingle on the board at the grocery store , "do you have a coon problem? did you loose all your chickens to them? will trap your coon 10 dollars a head." and see if I get any calls.

My 10 year old has been talking about it all year. I told him I'm going to make it tougher and make him set 1 1/2's this year, and that will be good training for coyote sets, down the road. He's pumped. We will be setting!!

$15 per coon then sell carcass in town for $20...$35 coons.
