For you who do, where do you find lead? Are wheel weights okay or too many junk alloys added?
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

My dad has made a lot of bullets. He tells me old wheel weights work the best. Most other lead is too soft, unless you can produce a jacketed bullet or powder coat them. The newer wheel weights aren't lead, but you probably knew that.

Lead wheel weights are a rare thing now days. They are now zinc or steel. The last batch I got came from a truck/trailer rental facility that a very good friend managed. They use some big weights. Even a tiny bit of zinc in your alloy is a real bad thing. I'm pretty lucky in that I have scrounged lead wheel weights, pure lead, lino-type, and pewter since the early 80's. I have also started to mine range lead from the berms at a local club that I belong to. They haven't been mined in 40 plus years. I probably have close to 1000# of material at my disposal. Range lead is nice stuff to work with. Just add a little tin (pewter) to aid in fill out and you're good to go. The only thing that goes thru my hand guns is cast by myself. I've put a lot of venison in my freezers with them. Reclaimed lead shot is another source though it's a little hard for my liking. Expensive too. To answer your question, yes lead wheel weights are good. Just add a little tin. Check out http://castboolits.gunloads.com/forum.php

My dad has 4, 30 gallon garbage cans full of lead. Printers lead, wheel weights, plumbers lead and some lead he melted down from batteries, etc.. He is 80 years old, so he scrounged a crapload of wheel weights, back when they were still lead.

lots of places to get it , most of them slowly drying up
ranges were you can buy the recalimed lead or mine the berms yourself
solder or putter helps fill out
you can buy lead bullet alloy for around 3 dollars a pound from some different sources if you think about that you get about 55 124gr bullets from a pound that would be about 6 dollars the hundred
Acme especially if you have a dealer that stocks them are great and you don't have any additional time in them sells cast and hi-tech coated bullets I think my last box was about 36 dollars and tax for 500 124gr RN .356 bullets when I was short on time that was my go to for league
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Check out any marinas that have a lot of large sailboats they will often have old lead weights that are use for ballist the downside is that they often come in 50 pound chunks the plus side is that they are often cheap, sometimes free for the hauling
Scrapped out an old sailboat two years ago and recovered about a half ton of lead balist which should keep me In casting lead for a while
