***NTA Alert- All Members! John Glowa, the anti-hunting & trapping advocate, is proposing two new rules dealing with coyote hunting and trapping!!***

URGENT!!!

You can find information on both of these rules here: https://www.maine.gov/ifw/news-events/rulemaking-proposals.html. They are also attached for your review.

We understand that anti-trapping and hunting advocates are submitting many comments to DIFW in favor of these rule proposals. We would like your help to demonstrate to the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife that there is significant opposition to these proposed rules and that they undermine Maine’s scientific wildlife management strategies.

Will you please take a few minutes to send a respectful email to DIFW with your comments opposing these proposed rule changes?

Comments can be emailed to: Becky Orff, Becky.orff@maine.gov

Here’s some thoughts to consider:

For the Predator Hunting Contest rule proposal (chapter 16):

-John Glowa is proposing to amend the definition of coyote to include wolf DNA
-Establish a registration requirement for coyotes
- Establish a daily bag limit of 1 coyote (posession limit of 5)
- Modifying the coyote hunting season
- Prohibiting coyote/predator hunting contests
- Prohibiting the take of coyotes under 40 pounds (how would this ever be possible?)

For the Coyote Trapping Season rule proposal (chapter 17):

- Would remove coyote from the statewide general trapping season

Sending a quick, thoughtful and respectful email to DIFW will help us defeat these two proposed rule changes. As always, please email me at jmcotecompany@gmail.com if I can answer questions or provide more information. Thank you for your help!

Will do!! Anti's are infiltrating the southern and most populated part of the State of Maine while Maine's rural communities are hard core outdoors people. This needs to get shut down overwhelmingly. Thanks for posting it Paul.

This is what I wrote, though a couple of sentences would be adequate just saying you oppose the poetitions :

Ms. Orff,

I have just been made aware of two proposed petitions, one to alter coyote hunting contest with daily bag limits and weight restrictions and another to eliminate coyote trapping in the State of Maine. I could not be more opposed to either of these petitions.

As a lifetime resident of Maine, an employer, and an avid outdoorsman who enjoys fishing, hunting and trapping, I have never received so many requests from landowners seeking help in removing some population of coyotes. I receive more calls for coyote control than even beaver. That says a lot as beaver populations throughout the state, as you know, are very large and are of big concern to a large portion of Mainers.

In addition, I have never caught as many fox and coyotes with mange than in recent years. When trapping in my youth, mange was unheard of. I have no doubt you know the science better than most, but it is clear to all that boom and bust populations are not healthy for species, and disease spread is brutal. There is no more effective means of removing some population than trapping and biologist across the country agree, and it helps to insure healthy robust populations of various species.

As for the hunting contest, the State of Maine needs hunters to engage in coyote control. There are regrettably less trappers than even a decade ago, and hunters can play an important role in managing healthy populations. How would the person that made this petition suggest the hunter get an accurate 40lb weight of the Coyote beforehand??? Quite absurd, in my opinion.

We outdoorsmen know you are a supporter of wildlife and the sportsman. I and sportsmen like me are more than willing and able to support your efforts as well. I employ dozens of avid outdoors men and women that would be happy to have their voice heard should these petitions have even a remote chance of gaining momentum.

Thank you for your time and for all you to keep hunting, fishing and trapping traditions alive and well in Maine, and for ensuring we have managed, healthy populations of all Maine wildlife.

If convenient, I would be interested to read the complete copies of the proposed rules if available.

Feel free to contact me anytime.

When this first was posted I wrote and email. Got a thank you for contacting them.

People outside of this state have no idea how bad things are here concerning furbearer management and representation.

Certain areas have legislatures who allow more, and other areas have legislatures who allow less.
We're told elections have consequences.
But do we believe this?
I've been a state trapping association president.
I believe yep.
