Three times the amount of deer licenses were sold in NY on day one compared to day 1 of last year.

Hunter safety courses were moved to online due to Covid and had twice as many participants as in the previous year.

Imagine that, if you remove barriers to entry more people will participate! Hunter and trapper safety courses are a good thing but making them a mandatory barrier to entry is in my humble opinion a reason both sports are dying. Moving the courses online and making them easier to complete should be something more states should consider in order to boost participation numbers and expand a conservation mindset.

Talked to the G & F couple days ago. Said the number of applicants for tags and license sales are up over 30% compared to last year. I told her Ray Charles could have seen that coming. Put people on lock down then open the gates and see what happens

VT just went to a one buck bag limit and I know a lot of guys that have turned to bow hunting NY because of it.

I like NY's seasons and bag limits better than PA's. Their license fees are reasonable too. I can't imagine hunting in a state with no hunter education requirement.

I agree that we need to find ways to requit more people into hunting I am not a certified instructer However I have been helping out with the course as given by a local sportsens club that I am a member of for about 20 years Our goal is to have people take the course and pass However I feel if there are people that do not understand the basiic rules of safe hunting do we really want them hunting.I am not implieing that those that may have some learning difficultly should not be helped so they can be able to hunt But I am not comfortable with passing everyone just so the numbers look good Hunter safety has been proven to lower the number of incidents that are part of hunting accidents It is good news that more people are geting involved and hopefuly that will motivate those new hunter for this coming season to get others involved in the coming years For about 20 some years I was active in a local Pheasants Forever chapter . We hosted a youth pheasant hunt for 8 to 10 kids for about 18 years One of the things I remembered was the first year we had a young lady attend she said no other girl in my school hunts I said well than when Mn . morning gets here your job is to tell people what you did today !You will not change the world in a day but one at a time we need to talk to peolpe and help them understand why we hunt and trap

Interesting that all of these comments are from non New York residents. Let me disagree. The new "improved" Decals system of purchasing licenses is a total disaster. Setting of deer seasons is pathetic. One year you can't get a doe permit, the next year they hand them out like candy. Obviously they do not know how to manage deer. I'll take Pennsylvania over New York any time.

A friend of mine from New Jersey tells me that some areas have "Unlimited" Antlerless tags and up to five or six Buck tags. Some areas have a three point restriction.

Recent history has shown that hunting can't control deer numbers.
I doubt if even a 30% increase in hunters will make a difference.
In my area bow hunters can shoot one buck and 2 does.
Even with bag limits like that the herd still is too large.

Herd is estimated at Approx 25/sq mile when all studies I've seen say the herd should be 6-8/sq mile for a healthy ecosystem.

100% online courses are not good. Part of it can be online but there also needs to be hands on training especially for the safety part. Same with trapping education. Taking a complete online trapping education course would be like watching a dvd on trapping compared to taking personal instructions.

What if that is the barrier to entry that stops kids from trapping?

I had no mentor, no one showed me how to trap I just found some traps and did it. Kids cannot do that now and in my experience it keeps them from trying trapping at all.

In Pa, if an online trapping course would be anything like the 'in person" hunter/trapper ed course, it would only take about 5+/- minutes. They prioritize very little time on the trapping portion. I would have to believe if Pa offered a 100% online trapping course, it would be much more educational. Better yet, require time spent at Trapperman. wink
