Got to thinking about all the shirt factories we use to have in our area years ago and am wondering if other areas of the U.S. had them??

Growing up in the 60's and 70's, most all women around here that worked, worked in what we just called a shirt factory. Its hard to think of a town around here that didn't have one.

They started closing at a fast pace in the 90's and were almost completely gone by the turn of the century. They're all closed near here now.

These were just small, maybe 50 wimmen at the bigger ones/towns. I don't recall any "brand" name that any went by, probably subbed work of a bigger company and family owned.

My Mom was a "seamstress" at such places for many years. As was my Grandmother.

there were always such shops around here, some small, some rather large. I am talking about the St. Louis area. They all closed a long time ago. Most I am guessing in the late 70's through the 80's.

During my time in Tn. there was at least one in Clarksville that a friend of ours worked at. Another in Paris. My sister worked there a short while.

That was in the 80's. They are most likely closed now, but I really have no idea if they are or aren't.

We had 4-5 cap factories around here. Small operations like you are mentioning.

This area was mostly mill towns. Cotton mill towns that made the cloth and sewed it into clothing. Griffin, Ga had three mills. All gone now.

I think we talked about this before by my great something grandfather started the mill in your area in Commerce, GA when it was still Harmony Grove.

Commerce is north of here but the towns in between Conyers and Covington also were mill towns. Even Atlanta had Avondale Mill.

Be nice to go back to quality clothing that was used until it wore out and needed to be replaced. Clothing today is cycled into landfill 10% worn due to the fashion industry and affordability.

I wish we could make more of our stuff in the USA and Canada once again. Stuff from China is starting to get expensive. We may be able to compete if we cut some of the government regulations. Not sure, I don't know much about manufacturing.

Don't remember a shirt factory per say, we had a Levi's factory that closed down around mid 90's.

There used to be lots of real tailors and cobblers too. There's one tailor shop I love that is owned and ran by Mexican ladies they do amazing work. I've let them work on my high end suits too

Big Yank was a shirt factory and Muskins, Willits, & Johnson Bailey were local shoe factories when I was a kid in the 60's.
