Good evening, I hope your all doing well. Iím Zachary and Iím 32. Iíve visited this site for a few years seeking information and I was pleased with many things found. I just recently decided on registering. I have been working on a 3000 acre High Fenced Private Ranch in Mississippi for 10 years. I grew up in the deep woods to a hunting family that was also heavy into motocross racing, I chose the motorcycles until 20 and then traveled as a hippie playing music and ramblin until The Lord chose me to a different way of life. With a strong desire to work hard I received a call from a cousin and in 2010 began working on the Ranch. 1 year into it, the ranch owner, a navy veteran, said he had a great friend, a 90 yr old retired navy lieutenant commander who had been trapping 60 years was coming for 2 weeks to teach me how to trap. I knew nothing about trapping, only that the brown brothers down the road said they trapped a beaver when I was 8. When the man, Mr. Bob Mars showed up, he handed me gloves and I was immediately under his command as he told me where to grab, step, and put each item. Iíve never been against authority but I had never been so gently and sternly told how to do everything. As he showed me the basic things and we loaded the buggy, he said be here at 6:45. I arrived the next morning and we set out. He told me where to step and be the whole time. Mr. Bob had been thru so many trials in his life, from working full time at 7, to World Wars, and 2 wifeís passing on, but yet his faith caused him to be gentle and kind, but stern. He only allowed me to watch for 2 strait weeks, and it was absolutely amazing to see this man do his thing. Upon his departure he showed me the steps to prepare the traps for next time and so I did. That was spring and in the fall of the next year he returned and we built an even stronger relationship and understanding of how things go. He started letting me grab his buckets and put lure in the hole, eventually after his 3rd trip the next year he said it was time to make my first set. At this point I was driving his stakes for him because he couldnít hammer hard enough. What Grit he had, and how impressive that was for a young man to witness. After I caught my 1st coyote he said he wouldnít be back and he hasnít been back since 2014. I still keep in touch with him and am grateful for him. I took everything he taught me and built on that foundation and thru my own trials and observations have become a confident trapper. I hope you all can think back on the good times when it all first began for you and pass on what is beneficial for the next person, seek the Lord while he can be found. And as Mr. Bob always said, Have a Good Evening Son.

great little story there......the type story I really enjoy reading.

I too had an older gentleman show me the ropes. My dad and grand dad got me started, Mr. Jack showed me much more. Funny, I was just thinking of Mr. Jack these past few days.

If I may, the best advice I can offer, is to keep the Lord close watch for and listen to what he offers for you to see. Some don't believe that, but I do and it has helped more than I can ever tell.

Good story. Ironically I was recently thinking of an old gentleman who sparked my interest in trapping when I was a young lad. Gene Jackson was his name and he was quite the trapper and woodsman. Fifty some years ago in northern Missouri. Seems like a life time ago, actually it has been. Thank you Gene and rest in peace. Hope there are plenty of mink to trap where ever you are.

Great story and welcome to the forum. We bicker a lot on here, but I think you'll find most on here would give the shirt off their backs, even to the people they spar with daily, lol.

For many of us, it is our time to be that person and show the younger how to have their heydays as we did. We are not washed up and can still get ur done. just time to show it also.
