does it have a proof mark?

that is how you tell if it is original , my guess is no

Sure is some pretty wood. Wouldn't mind having it on my M1. Mine carries the original GI issue. I will add another one to my collection in due time, then maybe upgrade to some fancy wood. Sarge

mine is very similar. It has proof marks and is original.

I believe what you have is tiger-striped birch. From my reading, it could be an original stock that was refinished, as the original finish was pretty dark and obscured the grain. According to web forums it's popular nowadays to refinish them for a nicer look like yours.

I refinished several and found some had fancy figured wood.
I always made sure to keep the stamped markings though.
