The guys at the feed store say do not put these pulits on laying mash until the actually start laying. Yesterday the first one was actin sneaky and dropped a little ege.

She is the first of 10 so we are at 10%. What advice would you guys who produce a lot of eggs give us?

Now or wait for the rest of em to catch up a little? Thank you in advance.

Finish the feed you have then give em the layer feed.

I would say they need the calcium to make the shells. If you don't go ahead and feed them laying mash or pellets give them oyster shell in a separate dish. It will be a benefit for the eggs. The chickens need to build up the amount of calcium in their bodies to continue laying eggs with a hard shell. The feed store sells 50 pound bags of oyster shell for about ten bucks and it will last a long time. Tractor supply and similar will charge you a lot more. Hope you enjoy you fresh eggs!

I would switch them to a layer ration as soon as you finish your old feed like Prn suggested.

Ours get laying mesh as soon as there big enough to go into the pen with the adult hens. Along with the laying mesh i also mix up black oil sunflower seeds and whole corn with scratch grains and throw that on ground every morning. Occasionally i’ll throw ouster shells in there to.

Usualy start at 18 weeks on the layer feed.I would start them now as said.I use Layer pellets like Savell stated,,at 16% protein. The type I use is calcium fortified,so between that and them being free range,,I don't worry about extra grit. They find enough on their own.

Yep, finish what you have. Its not that big of deal. I prefer crumbles, pellets are fine too. Never liked mash but honestly have no reason. Shouldn’t need grit. Any good feed has the calcium they need.

They eat just about anything and never seem to get full. Magpies are scared to come around then I throw out table scraps.

This is my buddy's wifes flock, he bought an acreage and I am helping make improvements.

They are black wyandottes and I think they are gorgeous. If they lay eggs as good as the look they will be the hot set up!
