I got a postcard from our Vet telling us our horse is due for the following:

3-Way Vaccine
West Nile Virus Vaccine
Influenza/Rhinopneumontis Vaccine
Large Animal Rabies Vaccine
Potomac Horse Fever Vaccine

Our Vet makes an annual checkup in October of each year, she has been doing this for the past 3 years. I have not kept a record of what shots our horse gets each year. My question is how many of these vaccines are necessary and how many are needed on an annual basis?

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

Curious as to what others have to say. I do not do the influenzas or Potomac but do the rest. If your going to travel you also need the Coggins, think they are 35 bucks and I get one of those every year so we can travel to other states legally... then I never do.

I might be ignorant but I have a beautiful Andalusian mare that I bought 12 years ago who has never had a vaccine. She had one shot of antibiotics for barbed wire wounds and nothing else.

Things are probably different in your area.

Good luck.

Pete

That's great, Pete.

What is most a concern, is the travel folks do from state to state. Shows, etc., mandate up to date health reports, and states also have their rules for travel over the borders.

Being in Pa for you id do a 6way that covers most of that in one shot a strep/ tetanus shot rabies and Potomac. Those 4 cover everything you'll need. Potomac is a mosquito carried disease but only found in certain areas. So see if there has ever been a case in your state or where you might haul your horse too. Some Eastern states require rabies for horses but not states out west. Out west we don't have the rabiez carriers like back east.

Other then rabies you should be able to buy those at your local farm store and save some $$.

Ps some of those would be way more affective if given in the spring when its closer to the season for those diseases and carrier's will be active.

More restrictions for animals crossing state lines that might have a disease than for people that do have one.

Some states require coggins every year if you travel or not. And the test alone should run 15 to 20 not counting fram call the vet is marking the price up on you.

Most of you have mentioned "traveling", Our horse does not travel, she stays on the property 100% of the time.

Based on where you live get the vaccines, skip the coggins if legal in your state.

Here's my 2 cents. I get the Coggins when I legally have to in order to take the horse to an event or to sell it. Ive never vaccinated a horse and have saved enough money by not to buy several in the price range that I spend on a new one.

Ok, understood, though the laws by state also are meant to protect those who may not travel, from those traveling through.

I should have clarified that .

Ask your vet about this , for details and if you may skip some things or not. Your vet has it down on local laws and the reasons , and surely would be fine sharing those with you.

Don’t fix something that’s not broke

You can ride a fast horse slow but you can't ride a slow horse fast .

When I used to live in Amish country in the Harrisburg area, many of the country stores had hitching posts for the Amish horse and buggies. Makes me wonder if the Amish vaccinate any of their horses with them being rode all over the country roadways and in close quarter with other horses and animals.
