On my way to town later today, gonna look closely at a Bergara Hunter and a Tikka T3X. Any input? At first look last week, I favored the Bergara, which surprised me, was expecting to have favored Tikka. Thanks.

I'm a Tikka fanatic. But, Bergara is doing some fantastic things. I wouldn't hesitate if you find one you like.

I just got my tikka t3x hunter 30-06 this week. It’s shooting sub 1/2 moa. I’m really happy with it so far, but I don’t know anything about Bergara

I guess the big question would be... What’s your budget and what caliber ya looking for?

Browning x-bolt is a decent rifle for the money. Fierce is making some stellar stuff. Of the two listed, I’d probably lean towards the tikka. Handled a few Bergara. Just wasn’t a fan. Didn’t feel they were any better than some of the rifles in the same class. Plus, I’ve never seen a tikka that wouldn’t shoot. Can’t say the same for the Bergara. Could get a lemon anywhere I guess but I’ve just not seen it in the tikka line. My buddy sent 2 Bargara’s back. Can’t recall the fix but it always sucks when there’s down time. Having said that, another guy just sent his Fierce back as well. Still waiting to hear the final outcome there.

I keep desperately hoping that one day someone will call me "Sir" without adding "please calm down" or "you're causing a scene."

The Tikka has a good reputation. Neither are pleasant to look at IMO but the deciding factor for me would be that you can get the Bergara without a detachable magazine.

Just back from trip to town, pity to spend beautiful day there rather than the woods. Daughter handled 4 rifles, and ranked them in best to worst:
Bergara, Tikka, R American, S Axis. Bergara had smoothest action and best trigger. Didn't buy one yet. I've got to do a little more research. Settled on .308 (v. 7/08 or 6.5Cr). B and T both have hinged floor plates rather than detachable box mag. 2 questions for anyone who's game: Bergara has tapped holes on action for scope mounting. I'm unfamiliar with this system. Easy and strong system to use? It also has synthetic stock. Easy or hard to shorten and reattach a recoil pad? Thanks

IME synthetic stocks are not made to shorten. I been doing recoil pads for over 30 yrs BUT not a Bergara.
I’d ask them via fone or email if they have a youth stock.
Good choice with 308 Win
You can get her Reduced Recoil ammo if needed.

Well, it sounds like Tikka fans are loudest. Tikka seems simplest to mount scope, too. Its new to me, my bolt rifles are old Rutgers. Probably get one or the other next trip, IF it's still on the rack. Can't find reduced recoil .308 loads now, but it's back ordered, and I've seen it around. Ammo shelves getting bare around here.

The .308 was a wise choice IMO.

I mount everything on EGW rails now they allow for the adjustment to got from a short shooter to a tall shooter on the same base

https://www.egwguns.com/remington-7...loader-short-action-picatinny-rail-0-moa

this is the B-14 short action rail other places sell them they all seem to be about the same price.

bagara seems to have a very similar rail here is how they recommend install

I would recommend a drop of blue locktite on each screw as you put them in otherwise I mount them just like this making sure to get all 4 screws in before I tighten any it helps to get better alignment

I took a weaver base of a rifle that I did 28 years ago with the thread locker that base was still as tight as the day I did it 28 years ago it was on a 30-06 I went to a EGW rail so I could get the new scope farther forward , having learned more about where I like them mounted in those many years.

I have noticed that both Bergara and Tikka have rail options for scope mounting. What's the advantage over bases and rings?

As stated above, more forward/backward adjustment for scope location. You can use any of the slots.

when you have the scope in the right place you never go searching for the retical

the rifle should come to shoulder , turkey neck out , drop to cheek weld and your eye should be perfect behind the optic

Turkey neck means you extend your neck out as far as it comfortably goes

drop to cheek weld you cheek bone should be resting with the weight of you head approximately or just a touch of down pressure on the stock so that your face is staying with the stock through he recoil

very few factory rifles have enough rise in the comb of the stock it is common to need add something to get higher

more new guns are coming with adjustable cheek pieces but still a very small number of hunting guns.

I am tall so the rear of my optics end up almost even with the trigger

as you daughter grows you may need to change the scope location , when you have a rail you just loosen the 2 bases and tip off and back on in the new location

here is one of of my 308

my cheek rests where I made the marks all the way at the front of that stock bag , the side you can't see so well is a suede like material the storage on the side is handy because it holds 2 - 5 round magazines and the loops hold 5 more rounds. the gun is always ready to grab and go with 15 rounds

the Cheek riser bag is just one of may ways to get the eye up to behind the optic

as you can see I can just get the bolt out without taking the bag off in many cases you may need to remove a cheek riser to get the bolt fully out

that optic has 3.7" of eye relief given where my cheek is , I drew in an eye approximately where i would be

when I cycle the bolt the back of the bolt will Just touch my cheek when all the way back.

Thanks GCP. I don't have the bandwidth here to view the video, but will later today. I like the idea of more forward/backward scope adjustment. Missed that the first time I read it. Thanks

Took my daughter back to shop. She insisted Bergara was a better fit, and it did have a ~1/2" - 5/8" shorter l.o.p., so we got the Bergara. Doing homework on scopes right now. It seems like a lot are out of stock. Been quite a while since I bought a scope, so definitely some new things out there. It seems like the trend is toward higher power variables. I've looked at 2 Vortex and they were both imports, not much on the shelves from leupold. Prefer made in USA, even though rifle is made in Spain. Definitely won't buy Chinese! Thanks for the inputs.

I have a number of the 2-7x32 vortex they are nice but they are imports even thought he company is based out of Wisconsin. some of their higher end stuff is US made

the trend is toward high magnification , I don't think they trend is right for hunting, much of what they are selling is for long range shooting it is all the rage right now.

when hunting distances are 10-250 yards you don't need a huge magnification a 2-7 or 3-9 will do just fine and weigh a lot less and be faster for shots inside 100 yards when you have a wider field of view.

Basically the bergara is a Remington 700 action with a side mounted bolt release and a bergara barrel and a much better trigger. As far as the bases for mounting a scope anything that will fit a short action Remington 700 will fit it. I have leupold bases and rings on mine. On the same note if you aren't happy with the stock you can put any short action Remington 700 stock right on it with no modification required. That may help you in the shorter length of pull for your daughter. Bergara guarantees those rifles to shoot sub MOA with quality ammunition and from what I have seen from mine and the 2 my friends have they have no problem backing up the guarantee.
