Alright need some imput before I do something possibly stupid..... Again lol.
Local pawn shop has a H&R single shot. 22 hornet for $135 . Has a scope mount barrel is in the shorter side but heavy profiled. I got the money but wanted to know what everyone thought of the hornet. Seems like a cool little round I can have some fun with reloading and such.

GET IT!!!
I love the hornet. No longer have one currently. Sold everything to cover some company debts but it was better than staying in a bad situation. Hodgdon li’l gun powder will be your friend. Any of the Hornet bullets will expand reliably at those velocities. I’d actually kinda gotten rid of it a little earlier to pay off surgeon bills and partly because it was nearly as cheap as reloading 223. But, it’s not a gun I’d have gotten rid of otherwise. Have always loved the cartridge. The only thing that’s a bit of a pain is the brass. They tend to not last as long as other stuff and they claim it’s due to the awkward taper of the cartridge. I can’t swear to that and can honestly say that my brass failure rate was less than some guys complained of but it still happened occasionally. If you can swing it, get it. Fun little cartridge to play with.

I keep desperately hoping that one day someone will call me "Sir" without adding "please calm down" or "you're causing a scene."

I think it's a worthwhile purchase. I used one many years ago for just about everything. It was my trap line gun. I used it on grouse, rabbits, fox, even a huge beaver. Ammo was cheap and common then. I don't know if it is legal for deer in your area, but i think it would work. Natives on the north slope used it for just about everything before oil money started flowing and .223 became common. Some must still use it because I occasionally see ammo on shelves in village stores. I used a soft point bullet, forgot the weight, and fur damage seemed minimal. It's not a long range varmit sniper, but I do think it's useful.

great little classic cartridge. for $135 I'd get it, especially since your reloading now. 11.2 grains of IMR 4227 is my load. brass is also thinner than standard cartridges which could be why it didnt last as long

Let me put this to bed right now, it aint no deer cartridge....just cause a givin round will "kill" a deer doesnt make it a "deer" rifle.

oh and im loading a 45 grain sierra hornet bullet, made specifically for the hornet. they made them in .223 diameter and .224, you'd want .224

If you're not careful you can crush case mouths pretty easily on a 22 hornet when seating a bullet. Id prefer one in 223 and load down to 22 hornet. At that price though you wont lose money on it if you decide its not right for you. Tell him $120 out the door and see what he says.

I've had one in single shot H&R and currently have one in a Ruger 77/22 and one in a contender pistol barrel. Its a good little cartridge when loaded up right has no problem short range on coyotes.

If you are looking for another caliber to reload and do it cheap. Its your round. For practical purposes..... you can download your 223 to do what a hornet does. You can't get the hornet to do what a 223 does. Personally I would leave it on the shelf.

I would buy that so fast you wouldn't get a chance. I already have one and for that price I would have two.

Have the exact same gun with a 3x9 Redfield on it. GREAT caliber for a fur gun! Very little damage, no recoil, and very accurate if you're reloading.

I don't know anything about the .22 Hornet but I do like the H&R single shot rifles. I don't care what caliber it was, for $135 I'd buy it.

I like to use this site to compare different calibers, especially if I have one I don't know much about. You can choose a bunch of calibers you are familiar with and see the differences side by side. https://ammoguide.com/cgi-bin/bcompare.cgi

Here's the comparison I did on .22 Hornet with some other cartridges in similar calibers that I am familiar with.

I shot many squirrels & groundhogs, a few turkeys & my first coyote with a hornet. I have had three & now only have one. It is a cheap savage from the 1950's but will put five shots into the 1" circle at 100 with the right reload. sometimes I wish I had my pre-war model 70 back.

I like 40 grain nosler ballistic tips in mine. 11 grains of IMR4227. Can go hotter but my gun is very accurate with that load. Great on fox bobcat and badger. I dont really use it on coyotes. I have but I like a little more pop. I dont know what the regs are in MS but you can shoot a turkey running away from you in the back with those noslers. Instant kill and it wont reach the breast. If you get out west its great for jackrabbits. It busts up prairie dogs a little but they still work for bait. Will blow a chunk out of a swift fox also. If you shoot them use a 22LR. If you head shoot squirrels or cottontails with a hornet the meat is still just fine. Never called coons but if I ever do I am grabbing that hornet. I am confident it will roll even those big boars without blowing a chunk out the off side.
