The blues look quite a bit bigger than the sharptails in that pic.

Nice pic Range! Blues are on my bucket list. Seen them many times elk hunting but would love to hunt them with a dog. Sharpies are one of my favorites. Hopefully be in Nebraska in a few weeks walking my rear off hunting them

Boco -
I weighed each of the last few birds taken. Only 2 were adults and they were at 2 lbs, 1 oz; and 2.0 lbs 0 oz. The YOY birds were 1 lb, 13.5 oz; 1 lb, 14.0 oz; 2 lb, 3.0 oz; 2 lb, 1 oz. (Adults at 836 and 907 grams; YOY at 836, 850, 992, and 935 grams). Our spruce grouse are barely a pound down here, so the blues are nearly twice the mass.
Jack That’s interesting! It’s never ever ever crossed my mind to weigh a grouse. Lol. How do you tell the difference between an adult and a YOY if the YOY can be bigger than adults?

How do you tell the difference between an adult and a YOY if the YOY can be bigger than adults?" - Quote from Jurassic Park
As White17 and others will attest, I weigh and measure 'bout everything. All data (anecdata) go into my little Rite-in-the-Rain notebooks, of which I've got several hundred that I've been keeping since 1969. On the grouse, easy to tell YOY birds from adults based on the amount of pin-feathers and incomplete ossification of the rear skull plate. Also, replacement, growth, and wear on the primaries is very different on the two age classes.
On these recent birds, I filleted the breasts and took the legs (deboned). Also the gizzards, livers and hearts. All told, had 2 lbs, 15 ounces of pure meat from those 4 YOY birds, equating to precisely 36.9% of live weight yield in pure meat.
And yes, White17, they do go to mass, then they go into my mess.

Gulo, do only YOY have pin feathers or is it something they’ll have each year, just less the older they are?
And when you’re looking at their skull, are you scalping them and looking at the bone directly or analyzing it through the feathers? Thanks!

It's my understanding that the franklin and spruce grouse are one and the same.
The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

They are a subspecies then, like a red grouse (heather grouse) is a subspecies of the ptarmigan(willow grouse)? Our spruce grouse dont make that loud gunshot sound like the franklins on vid.
