Picked up a Winchester Model 100 in .284 yesterday. Anybody on here have any experience with this rifle or caliber? I've got a wanted ad in the Trapshed for brass. Having a hard time finding ammo or brass for the thing, although I kind of knew that going in. Just don't see these guns come available in this area.

Nice find. I think some 100's had some recall issues. Better check for the upgrades.

In 1990, Winchester issued a recall for this rifle due to a tendency for the firing pin to stick and protrude proud of the bolt face, causing the rifle to fire with the action not fully locked, leading to possible catastrophic failure and risk of severe injury or death to the shooter.

I have a model 100 in 308. Have had it a long time it is my bush gun. have a wiilliams peep on it. Nice gun to handle , very fast. One thing you have to do is keep it squeeky clean, or you will have jamming. I disassemble and clean it every year after the deer hunt. It can be a bit tricky to reassemble., go online and google detailed instructions. Enjoy it they are a nice handling rifle. old243

I think you'll really like it it's a great gun and a even better caliber . As you're learning brass or loaded ammo is tough to find as are small base dies for it

Is a favorite caliber of mine, I'd suggest looking at the interlock 139 Hornady BTHP bullets and up to the 150 gr do well .
Lapua may have brass for the .284 but it won't be cheap but better than Winchester brass or I should say more consistent brass if that makes sense.

I found brass at both Handloadersbench and Greybeards sites last yr.

Old243 is right. I had to work on loads of em in Idaho when I was gunsmithing. I built a few custom bolt guns back then in .284.
It is a great cartridge, .280 Rem ballistics out of a short action.

Milo hansen killed his buck with a model 100 308. The 284 was ahead of it's time and the model 100 is not known for accuracy. I happen to collect 100's and 88's cause that's what my dad and uncles used when I was growing up. On the 100's they will slam fire occasionally. Nothing like pulling the trigger on something and spraying 4 more rounds above it. For woods hunting there's nothing that comes up faster than either one.

Been 15 years or so since I bought a Ruger 77 in .284 but ammo wasn't hard to find then. I'm guessing once he election is over and shelves start to fill up again you'll be able to find it again

I'd be interested in buying it if you want to sell it.

You need to see if your 100 had the mod done to it, there was a problem with them, and they asked everyone to send them in to be fixed, not sure what they did to them. Here's some old info on them.

Model 100.

You can buy 6.5x284 brass and fire form it.
Cheaper than regular 284 brass
But after fire forming the cost is the same

Both Graf and Midway show brass in stock.

Around 61 bucks for 50.

Haha yeah model 100's are like a needle in a haystack in this area. A .284 is even more rare. Just hope I can find ammo for the thing!
