Hey guys, lately I’ve been trying to keep things simple. I’ve got some coyote and fox traps to treat. I used to boil coon traps in walnuts, and then waxed them. I don’t have any wax, and season starts in a couple weeks. Can I boil my coyote traps in the walnut hulls, and then set them immediately after? Will they rust quickly once they are put in the ground? Thanks!!

If you’re worried about the wax, grocery store sells it. Look in the canning section.

When I was young we ran traps without wax and still put up fur all the time. Setting on sign is the most important thing to do. I do like that you're using the KISS principal

Iv boiled my traps in walnut hills and go set them, that’s the way my grandfather taught me. Never a problem. I agree.

The walnut contains tannin and unique elements that dye the steel, prevent rust, and actually work like a disinfectant to remove odors. The walnut hull scent dissipates and is sealed under the wax.

Oughta work fine UNLESS you are adding an antifreeze like salt or calcium chloride. Then the traps will need protection like wax.

I just filled a 3'X4' garden cart with walnuts from under 1 tree. we have 7 more. just You're lucky. We have a relatively poor crop of walnuts this year. I only get a bucket or so a day off of several trees right now. Hopefully next year should be a good one. Only around a dozen, out of a few hundred of my walnut trees had walnuts this year. Keith

I don't feel so lucky when I gotta pick them up. Do you sell yours? I can't give them away. just I recently bought a G. Gardner Master Nut Cracker that cracks black walnuts very easily. I can crack close to 30 black walnuts a minute with it and a lot of the meat comes out in whole quarters. Diane and I both like the flavor of black walnuts, especially in baked goods. If I get a lot, I may sell the shelled nut meats, but we will probably mostly consume them ourselves. You can store unshelled black walnuts for up to 10 years. I also want to plant a bunch of black walnut trees for lumber and hopefully veneer. I lost about 350 white ash trees, to emerald ash borer and need something to replace them. Black walnut trees grow well on my property and there is always have a good market for their lumber. Do you ever eat your black walnuts? Keith
