After 2 years my torn meniscus seems to have healed up,So I hope to go after rats as if it is for the last time, cause that may be the case.
Always figured they would find me,draped over a rat house.

Getting pretty dry here in SE SD, so many of my spots from the spring have dried up. Should have a few in the bigger sloughs but not like last spring. Starting drying out in August and it has really put a damper on a lot of good spots.

I'll set a stop loss or three right next to your carcass Tom, Say "He weren't no trouble" and keep on plugging!
Good luck to ya!
Wish I had rats to trap.
I miss that muck smell.

Blessings,
Mark

Wise words from a wise man. Are those your words? Actually, much truth in those words. Don’t wait for tomorrow if you can do it today. We may not be around tomorrow,

My son checked with our buyer a couple days ago and he is taking "rats" whole at $4.50 a piece...with the way things are can't beat that deal.

Good deal Garry!

I hope I still have some open water when season finally starts.

Always trap some muskrats.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

I am going to trap them again. After 55 seasons I can't quit. Low water is hurting things here too.

Tom and Mark,,, first off 'rats use "fresh vegetation" to build their huts/houses (doubt very serious if Tom is that fresh !) so he won't last more than a few hours there before the 'rats move him off, 2nd if you use a stoploss Mark, you will have too clean out the the opossums by setting more traps or increasing the pan tension on them to miss the grinners as Tom always carries a piece of road asphalt in his pocket, and 3rd Tom would much better fit in a beaver dam than in a 'rat marsh so I believe the 'rats would tow him to the marsh outlet or inlet for Fed-X otter delivery to a beaver colony...... my take..... the mike

I'm starting tomorrow . Got my annual ADC job at $10.00 a rat and a $200 set up fee. One check and I'm done. Most likely will take about 40 some rats. Then It's back after Ice out to do at all over again.
Then I'll wait till sometime In early Nov to do my other ADC job. Same fees but I have some chucks to trap along with the rats. A easy grand with not much work.

I'll skin them and save the carcasses for bait.

Tom, do you use stop loss at huts? Only asking cause I always assumed that small pan configuration resulted a percentage of misses vs time spent at each hut before moving on.
My thoughts were always,..get em off and get em down.

Iwill usually set 4 stop loss on a large house. Many times first check will have 4 rats. Never considered pan size a problem.

Colony traps are real rat killers in the right situation.

I don't own a stop loss but a #2 or a #1.75 with a wild river pan system will do the job. High catches with no wring offs.

I say whatever works for you ,is the best way to go. I have used stoploss for 55 years and am comfortable with the job they do for me.I do like colonies in front of den holes and runways.
