I will trap some rats locally. Not getting carried away.

Then after prepping them vacuum pack and throw in the freezer. They stay good for a very long time.

You got that straight Beav. When the colony is the ONLY trap you can use, one understands how really valuable they are. I wouldn’t go back to footholds or coni’s even if they were legal in my state.

Iwill usually set 4 stop loss on a large house. Many times first check will have 4 rats. Never considered pan size a problem.

Thanks for the answer Tom. I could never get beyond that thought of a smaller trip area. It makes sense in a way that, in fall at least, rats would make numerous visits to its structure. I rarely stayed more than two days

I use almost 100% 1 stoploss for rats too. It is not the small pan issue for catching rats as it is the smaller trap is easier for the rat to bring up vegetation and plug them easier, especially in pushups in the winter. I have tried a couple dozen 1.5 coils to see if my catch percentage was up but have not seen much improvement with my limited trials. I like working with the long spring when placing the traps in the pushups, saves a few oops!

They are heavier than a 1 also which is a bonus.

I'll trap some, but it's pretty dry here. Lots of places that should be full of water are bone dry

I've never been much of a stop-loss guyf. I get a few wring offs but not much of a percentage. I think the old #1 LS is a taker in a small hut during winter trapping. Push it in the hole so just the back few inches are above the water line. A lot of times, a rat hits it, can't back down the hole but the rat and trap is too big to push up the hole so basically drowns right there fairly quick. I have some old, old #1 LS that are still taking fur...

Haven't seen many houses or sign of rats here in SW Minnesota. I think disease is ravaging my area.

I think disease tends to follow with drought. Or so I think. We had a drought from August 2011 through most of 2012. After that, it took until 2017 or even 2018 before I saw occupied rat huts in my county. It wasn't in drought conditions for 5 years...

I plan to trap some this fall! My daughters are getting excited! My wife and I added another to the family since the last year, a son! Although prices are not what we would like to see I will continue training my daughters and now my son in the ways of the Marsh. In hopes of someday one of them continuing trapping,or the teachings of it and the enjoyment of the time out.
My daughters and I took a small drive today to check out a few areas and things look pretty good. Lots of building and activity going on in the marsh.
Enjoy your time out and take a kid if you choose to go!

Spent the day dyeing traps and now I have to sit for a spell.

Day's biggest accomplishment is I now know

exactly how many #110 Body grips I own.

the count is 301 that I have been able to find.

(I know I have more buried somewhere)

Most are vintage Victor Conibear square frames.

Many are newer Victor Conibear with frame bends,

and some are Victor Conibear 2's.

A dozen are BMI's with dinner bell triggers.

A few Montgomery Stake n' Takes.

A few B&L Sure Grips.

and 1 Big Bear. LOL.

80 are Dukes.

I've really got to sell these things as I haven't set one since about 2012,
when I switched over to #160's.

All tolled, they fill 2 and a half yellow & black Lowes totes

Next up is dyeing around 200 Duke #160's.

Muskrat could be in trouble next Sunday If I live that long.

I have one property where I am expected to "kill em all", plus it's fun for the kids so we'll probably skin a few

Just happy to be here.

Limited rats around here but will go after them if I can find them. I'll go after them while the deer hunters are out and about, good time to be out in the ponds instead of the woods anyways. Have a few spots I'll wait on till freeze up and then go after them as well as set a few snares for coyotes. Makes for an interesting mix.

One foot in the grave, the other on a banana peel in my canoe, with your hand on my shoulder !!! laugh

I feel like I'm ready to drop dead, any minute.

It was a long season of work that sucked the life out of me.

I'm exhausted and rat season starts in 10 days.

Hope I get my 2nd wind soon so I can keep agitating my Canadian buddies !!! laugh

Firm believer in stoploss. Now, the question is Victor or B&L? I prefer the B&L. The whack'em spring comes from opposition directions on each trap. I find it hard to compress the spring of the trap and the whack'em spring together.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.
