If velocity is 1250 fps and gun weighs 7 lbs = ~39-40 ft lbs.

Grousewit, your formula is a little off in that it will give you an astronomical value. Let's take a look at a simple 22 single shot rifle. Weight, 6 pounds, high velocity round at 1280 fps. 1/2 M = 3 lbs V = 1,638,400 (fps)squared gives you 4,915,200 pound feet per second squared That's enough energy to knock down a building, probably a big building, with a single pull of the trigger. Go here, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_recoil, get a good calculator, and put on your thinking cap. I at one time dealt with this sort of thing and am glad I don't anymore. Really glad. To eliminate the need for a calculator try this one. http://www.shooterscalculator.com/recoil-calculator.php The only caveat is you need to open up a shell and weigh the powder charge. I'm not clear as to why you don't need to input the specifics on the powder itself, burn rates, pressure curves, etc.

Google average recoil for 30-06 81/2lb rifle 17.5 ft lb @ 11.5 FPS doubt a 20guage would be as much.

I am trying to figure out why you would want to shoot 1 7/16 oz of shot out of a 20 ga. Its like shooting a 90 gr bullet out of a 22 cal rifle. They make 12 ga shotguns if you need that much shot.

EXACTLY !! Trying to make a 20 into a twelve. They're playing chess and your thinking checkers. Same amount of shot in a smaller bore gives you a longer shot string, which is preferable (to some) in wing shooting or clay bird competition.
