Any idea how many ft lbs of recoil this 20 gauge ammo produces?

Federal Premium 3rd Degree 20 GA 3" 1-7/16 oz 5,6,7

Hard to say! Shooting it in a gas powered auto? a single shot. Youth light weight. Tons of variables. Best just try it and if it kicks too much shoot a lighter load or drop to 410.

But another thing ,if you are shooting at a target it will kick. An animal it won't !!!

If velocity is 1250 fps and gun weighs 7 lbs = ~39-40 ft lbs.

Grousewit, your formula is a little off in that it will give you an astronomical value. Let's take a look at a simple 22 single shot rifle. Weight, 6 pounds, high velocity round at 1280 fps.

1/2 M = 3 lbs
V = 1,638,400 (fps)squared
gives you 4,915,200 pound feet per second squared

That's enough energy to knock down a building, probably a big building, with a single pull of the trigger.

Go here, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_recoil, get a good calculator, and put on your thinking cap. I at one time dealt with this sort of thing and am glad I don't anymore. Really glad.

To eliminate the need for a calculator try this one. http://www.shooterscalculator.com/recoil-calculator.php
The only caveat is you need to open up a shell and weigh the powder charge. I'm not clear as to why you don't need to input the specifics on the powder itself, burn rates, pressure curves, etc.

After I Googled "shotgun recoil" for ya
although you'll have to convert the oz shot charge to grains this will do it
http://www.shooterscalculator.com/recoil-calculator.php

...1 oz is 437 gr.

and a gas/auto could have bout 10--20% less as mentioned.

Teaching proper shooting form, with the elbow up in line with shoulders, of trigger pulling hand, will stretch out those muscles so pain/bruising is less....not often used in low recoil black rifles though.
ya may already know, but wanted to make sure.

Google average recoil for 30-06 81/2lb rifle 17.5 ft lb @ 11.5 FPS doubt a 20guage would be as much.

11.5 FPS isn't very fast!!!

30/06 usually has a 150-180gr payload. A 20ga 1-7/16oz=629gr. Still doubt it?

You guys crack me up. Must be city folk !!! Just try one!!!. EVERYTHING looks good OR BAD on paper. Real life testing as in Put the shell in a gun , NO let me rephrase that in YOUR GUN and test it. Formula on how hard it will kick really? How about a recoil pad how does that figure into your equations ? PLUS what one person may think is kicking like a mule another one my use them and not blink an eye.........

628 grains
1225 fps
7 pound gun

26 foot pounds of recoil

you can enter your values as you like

https://gunpros.com/recoil-calculator-charts/

a typical 7 pound 20ga even with a 2 3/4 5/8 oz slug has more recoil than a 30-06

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I am trying to figure out why you would want to shoot 1 7/16 oz of shot out of a 20 ga. Its like shooting a 90 gr bullet out of a 22 cal rifle. They make 12 ga shotguns if you need that much shot.

They're playing chess and your thinking checkers.

Same amount of shot in a smaller bore gives you a longer shot string, which is preferable (to some) in wing shooting or clay bird competition.

Hippee depends on shot size. Also more shot per powder load is sometimes a hinderance. BUt 20 gauge owners have tried for years to push the caliber into 12 gauge space as loads go.
I had a 20 gauge once . was a die hard squirrel killer at the young age of 9. At 12 years of age I invested in a stevens 311 side by side. I was in heaven!! Until I hunt the lake edge and ran into a passel of Fox squirrels. THE inadequacies of the 20 came to the top in a hurry. Trying to kill one in the top of a scally bark hickory was more than it could handle. After knocking out 4-5 and watching in horror as they ran off on the ground I was done. I finally shot one as it left on the ground and noticed several blood blisters on it belly. Sold it that week (yea wish I still had it) Got my trusty ole 12 gauge single barrel model 37 winchester back out and put a hurting on them next morning
