Hey guys, for fastening my 330s, I normally run cable off my traps and use a quick link to cable them off to a tree. I was thinking that spring hooks may save some time and effort, as I hate dealing with rusty or locked up quick links in cold, chest high water. I’m wondering if anyone uses these? I’m concerned that if an otter or beaver fights the trap hard enough, they may be able to somehow get the spring hook to come off or break since not a tightened , solid piece. Thoughts? Thanks!

The guy that taught me to trap back in Oregon used some kind of snap hook...the kind that opens kinda like a pincher. Never had any kind of trouble. Everything that got snapped in a 330, 280 etc was doa.

The snap type you would find on a dog leash or horse lead rope works good but I would suggest brass vs. steel or it'll rust up on you. I use qick links but add a dab of grease to them occasionally and always carry a pliers with me just in case I get a sticky one.

I make up all my anchor cables out of used snares, with a loop on each end. i make them no less than six feet long.

the important thing is to leave one end with a loop big enough to pass a 330 through.

Put the cable on a spring eye, by passing the cable through the small loop. Now the cable is on the trap.

Now go around whatever your anchor is, and pass the trap through the big loop.

No clips, snaps, or other crap you need to buy, and I can have a trap anchored faster than it takes me to compress the springs. You can also hook up several together if your anchor is a long way away. I can also use the cable anchors to anchor any size trap, and also as snare extensions, slide wire extensions, etc.

I just roll the anchors up after like a snare.

if you mean karabiners, I've been using them for bout 20 yrs, Locklear uses 1/4" for yotes.
I use 3/16" for beavers and coon, etc, and trapped them full time/yr round for 7 yrs and never had a failure
they are aluminum, too.
I get a bag of 100 for $33.00

No matter what you use just make 2 wraps around your anchor point and then there will be very little stress on your fastener.
I make my own fasteners they look like a over sized safety pin.

Most dog leash snap links etc, are made of "pot metal" And I wouldn't rust them for traps.

The ones Cumbelands sells have a threaded ferrul on the spring portion so you can lock it from opening if you wish... It's a great feature.

This is what i do. 2 or 3 wraps around a tree or stout bush stem.

Make and end like on my Adjustable Length Sliders. Open it up to pass the trap through and close it back to gain length. see details on web site.

A small piece of clear plastic hose on the hinged side of a carabiner can lock it until you slide it back. Is that understandable?
just

Problem is they are prone to degrade. Now if we could get autolocking style beeners like I'm using to climb trees with, that'd be great.

Permanent loop on trap end. Two double ferrule on anchor end no loop. Run the permanent end through the spring eye then the other end through loop. That fastened the trap end. Take the other end with the two dbl ferrule take one ferrule off loop cable around anchor and go back through the ferrule on the cable just like you were making a permanent loop. Take the tag end and slip the second ferrule on, make a small loop with a couple of inches of end sticking out pull the ferrule down hard against the small loop slide the small loop down to the ferrule forming the loop around the anchor. This will make a mechanical lock that will break the cable before it will slip. To reuse, if cable is kinked to bad where the lock was pulled down tight just snip the kink off and go again.
