If your buying used partial, or blemished gear and computers you can actually cut your costs down pretty low. Powder seems to have stayed pretty stable at least ordering from midsouth. Primers and some bullets are about the only thing g I've seen in line that are either out or price gouged.
Honestly I recon it would depend on what your local ammo prices are because where I'm at I'm dropping an average of $18 odd buck for 20rd of most all center fire above. 223

Every Cadet exercise we had to turn in the brass to get the next allocation for the kids shooting. There was a 10% loss factor
Somehow there was always 5 pounds of empty 22 brass come in before the exercise, so a few rounds could feed the squirrels later.

One time we got a case of 22 tracers, now that added a little wake up call on the range for the kids shooting

it depends I just bought Speer 165gr BTSP .308 for 20.99 a 100 , powder isn't cheap but 32.99 a pound for H4895 primers Large Rifle I found some for 45.99

cost per round about 46 cents $9.20 a box of 20 for 308win but it isn't FMJ it is a good hunting round.

with the equipment your first box is $309.20 but your second box is only 9.20

start with something that uses Large rifle or Large pistol primers as they are just easier to find right now.

they hit where I aim

I am not going to profess that they are the best ever but shoot fine for me when I am doing my part I can take the bolt head off the steel target at 200 yards yes I keep some bolts in my truck to replace them, not sure why it is so fun but it is until your down there with a wrench

I like to find one bullet I can shoot for target and deer. I just learn the round better that way if it is one load.

both deer taken were down in a few feet to a few yards. shot placement was also good but had exit at around 24 and 28 inches both deer shot diagonally from the front just in front of the shoulder exit at the back of the ribs on the opposite side

Right now I'm reloading .45 ACP. Common large pistol primers are gone but the gunshop owner has tons of magnum primers which will work fine, just a little hotter primer.
When I catch it on the shelf, 9mm ammo is a little over $13 bux for a box of 50.
.45 the other day was $41 for a box of 100 Winchester with brass casing.
.45 FMJ bullets were $26 a hundred. That seems high to me so I'm not doing a lot of plinking.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Picking up brass can actually get really expensive.....anytime you collect enough brass to make reloading for that caliber practical and you don’t already own a gun in that caliber then you are required to buy one. I’m sure that’s the first rule of brass collecting.

I have my own range but am still obsessed with it.

The other day I was at the farm working. An arrogant wild pig was rooting around near me and just begging to be shot. I grabbed the 300blk from the truck and shot him.

Obsession kicked in and I spent the next 5 minutes crawling around looking for ONE case. Found it!

We use empty 22 brass to fill old shot bags for "sand" bags for sighting in rifles. They are a lot lighter than sand.

if loading FMJ it is hard to load it for signifigantly less than the factory

your buying the same bullets , same primers and powder but they buy in such quantity

change it up a bit and load cast , coated , plated you can change your inputs the Acme Hi-Tech coated were about 10-11 cents a round , loading procedure is more like cast but when you have 50 rounds of 45 for around 10 dollars for 50

I scrounge, gather, hoard and accept "gifts". grin

I have feelers out to everyone I know that shoots and some that don't to bring me any and all the brass they find. I end up getting a lot of calibers I don't even shoot but - looking around - here's my secret:

Once I have several hundred casings for a "missing" caliber then it's "Honey - I have all this brass, I really should have a gun to shoot it with."

“Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.”
