It happened this week. It has been spotted twice in my rural neighborhood. The odd thing is, I am not aware of any pig farms in the area. It appears to be just 1 (hopefully not pregnant). Is it rare for a farmer to have a pig escape? If they escape, I wonder what the likelihood is it might return to the farm. I suppose it is possible someone dumped off their pet. It's been on the run for nearly a week so far, with no word of anyone looking for it. If it comes on my property, I might shoot it. I talked to DNR. They didn't say whether or not I should shoot it, but they said wild pigs are a concern. There is not currently a known wild hog population in my area. Deer escape game farms. It occured to me that I am surprised I have never heard of hogs escaping from a farm.

I think it is a feeder pig, not a pot belly.
It might indeed make some good porkchops.

One time my son and I were driving grid roads in North Dakota scouting for ducks. I saw something weird cross the road way ahead of us. When we got up there I saw a huge pink pig giving me the stinkeye from the cattails. Not a farm in sight.

if several people have seen it

I would call the sheriff if no escapees have been reported , farms are more likely to call the sheriff than the DNR, no one is looking for it

I would shoot if it was any place I was legal to shoot

I would shoot even if the farmer is looking for it , if it has been out more than a day it needs to be down you can call the sherrif and tell them it is down so they can subtract it from the number they are looking for if any one was looking for it.

your trapping license , small game , deer , all work for shooting feral pigs , if it isn't in a fence containing it , it is feral.

Good point. I've never heard of a farmer calling DNR.

If I get it, I'll let you know. I alerted other neighbors tonight. We have our eyes peeled for it.

Back when there was a lot of small hog farms, it was not out of ordinary for a pig or even fat hog to jump out of a truck when being hauled. I know of one fat hog that jumped out and lived, the owner couldn't catch him. If he had got killed the stockyard insurance would have paid for it. But since no carcass, no insurance.

I know in Mississippi the second a hog of any kind leaves the property it is kept on raised on etc. it is considered feral and fair game. I imagine most states look at this way as if they ever get established they are impossible to control.

20 years ago or so I was driving the grain truck home and saw an emu running in the picked bean field across the road from my house. There were 2 of them running loose in the area and no one would claim ownership. It was thought they belonged to a hobby farmer in the area but he claimed they weren't his. Neighbors assumed no one claimed ownership because they didn't want to be liable if they were hit by a car. One ended up getting run in a combine by a neighbor picking beans after dark. The other was shot. Could be why no one wants to admit ownership of the hog .

Not sure if it's an Old Wise Tale... but don't escaped farm pigs start to take on feral characteristics quickly?
