Man youre lucky down that way, with what ya have, not your catch.. Up here right now its hard to see a rat house that big from all the blown snow. Was nice today, I walked out into a marsh and got a little line in, will prob pull tomorrow and wait this next snowstorm out, not very many pushups this spot, but found a lot of blind runs thru cattails, thin ice, we'll see what happens. Still havent caught my two otter, maybe I'll try to focus on that for a couple days.

5 Dozen plus in one day. Busy day and busy night! I see you have about 2-3 inches of snow. We have about that much but did not get cold enough temps to get the ice you have before the snow came. Talking about a mix of moistures coming the next few days. Talked with some people from Madison today and it was 41 there at 1 PM. Your ice is holding up well.

A blast from the past!

Good day at The end of a record week......followed by a Polar Vortex

Some evidence that the science of under ice muskrat trapping can be productive.

Catch pics are too much work!

Chris, great photos but my question is this. Typically I have noticed that during warm spells I don't have as much activity or the rats don't seem to move as much. We have had quite a long spell of what is warm December and January weather and was wondering what you have noticed on your winter line this year?

And at this rate with the cooperating weather, you will be ready to go back to work in March.

Bryce I guess I prefer to rat trap on warmer weather because itís less work. I agree that the rats are less active but such is winter in general. Look at the weight gain. Our little buddies just lay around and gorge.

Justin Iím never ready to go back to work!

I don't argue the fact that it is more fun when warm. This would have been the warmest mid-December-Mid January to trap for me but we did not get cold enough before the snow to travel where the rats are on the ice.
I got into about 4 smaller areas and got about 60-65 rats. Numbers are up. We have not had much moisture at all for 2 months. If we have a long dry spell many of the areas with rats now will dry up.

Things constantly are changing in the marsh. Try again and you may be surprised.
Yes record wet has populations up establishing healthy new colonies. However Mother Nature gives and takes and thatís inevitable. Trappers should reap the benefits of a healthy crop because they starve out during drought.
Fortunately we have a long winter season ( not long enough) to observe, experiment and gain knowledge of this elusive critter. Knowledge is power.

I picked up seven on my small line yesterday, thought we were gonna get a snowstorm so I pulled my sets, but we just got slop. Sleds running, should be out there tomorrow.

I dont mind the slop, just thought we were getting 8 to 10 inches and heavy winds. And without a machine, sled pulls like a cement block on a rope in this slop. Do you cover all holes w something? political sign material?
