My daughter and son in law have a 2009 ford Taurus. The water pump (apparently it is within the engine) failed and coolant went in the oil. The timing belt needs to be replaced to. Question; does the timing belt have anything to do with the water pump? What should this cost to repair.

I do these all the time. I has a timing chain, not a timing belt. The timing cover has to come off,the timing chains removed, and the water pump replaced. There are special tools required to hold the cams in place, but if you're feeling adventurous you could make your own.

The tools are just brackets that go on some flats on the cams to keep them from turning with the timing chain off.

Are you sure it got coolant in the oil? These water pumps have a wep hole they goes to an external hole on the side of the block and they leak coolant all over the alternator and AC compressor when they fail. Id they leak into the oil, it's typically because the pump housing itself has cracked, and and it's sending aluminum chunks through the engine. I'd it really is getting coolant in the oil, don't start it or drive it until you get it repaired, you might get lucky.and not have to replace the engine.

I'm wondering how hot the engine got? Coolant in the oil sounds like a head gasket or cracked head/block.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

This is not my car. There were told 1,200 to replace the pump. The they found out the timing chain needed to be replaced. That added 1,800 more dollars to the repair cost. At thee Grand I told them to junk the car and use the three Grand as a down payment on a newer car. Not a ford. Ford sucks. Just for this reason.

The 3.5/3.7 is a good engine minus the water pump thing. I'm not sure why they quoted you an extra $1800 for the timing components. All that stuff has to come off to do the water pump anyway, so there shouldn't be any labor cost, just the cost of parts. And I'd be curious to know why they though the timing components needed to be replaced. Maybe a chunk of metal from the broken pump gouged a guide or something?

Book cost for each separate, they're being gouged. It's time to find another shop.

Ask your son in law if he minds you talking to a shop.

Some less than scrupulous shops love nickel and dimming young people.
