I noticed wild asparagus in the roadside ditch has red berries on it. If I plant these berries will asparagus grow? If so when should I plant these berries?

The red seeds are predominantly found on a female plants and will and can germinate if planted or left to go to seed, they are also toxic to pets and humans. I have a hydroponic greenhouse and tried to germinate seeds with some success but prefer root stock crowns for transplanting.

I also found some plants along the crick at the ranch a few days ago nevah saw it before. It was 4 feet tail I cut it down to the ground. I scratched in all the red seed pods with hopes of it will take hold.

Yes the seed pods are toxic.

Yeah, they’ll grow with time. But root stock is so much faster and cheap, starting by seed isn’t really worthwhile.

I agree, buy 2 year old roots and you will get a light harvest 2 years later and then good to go.
You can germinate the seeds too but it is way easier to prepare a good bed and plant roots.
I often see the wild stuff along fences and under power lines. I think birds eat the seeds and then
deposit them there along with a little fertilizer.

X2

I gathered seed from some growing along the pasture fences and planted them. I picked and planted them after the plants turned golden color in the fall. So far have not had any come up. Going to try and work up the ground a little and cover the seed with grass and leaf litter. When the birds sit on the fence and deposit them they germinate just laying on the ground. So I figured why go overboard and just let them lay on top,
I've also dug some up. Wow what a job that was. They were all several years old. Out of the ones I dug there was only one small young plant that is growing.

Okay, so if I dug up that wild asparagus and moved it to a better location, what success would I have in relocating it?? I would be able to prepare the ground with much better conditions.

I picked some seeds last Sept and planted in raised beds. Almost all germinated. About a month ago I transplanted them into a permanent bed ground level. Very deep. They seem to be doing great. If they survive the winter no harvest until 50% in 2023.

Wild asparagus is tough. If you get most of the roots it will be okay. Sometimes you do not get all the roots and it comes up again where you dug it up. Just make sure you get the crown and plant it where you want it. I dug some with a skid steere- it have a 3' around root ball. I chopped it up into sections with crowns and made my own patch. Worked great.

Just passin through

Three houses ago i had a great bed created by just digging up wild roots and re-planting them where I wanted them. I did nothing special.

Thanks ebsurveyor and Larry Bear.

I will do it in the spring and be careful to get entire root system the best I can. I will replant in well prepared soil because where the plants are now is a terrible spot along a crick.

If my brother in law ever decides to take out the fence rows where they are growing good, I will get the backhoe out and dig them out. Then replant them like larry did. Until then I just drive my side by side around and cut the spears when ready.
