The one you hang a tag on.

To be honest I believe the trophy is the experience in the outdoors so may not be the right guy to answer.

I'd agree I guess Trap Setter.-
These two knot heads run the neighborhood and I been thinking of them as Taylor & Wilson (Wilson is bashful and thinks nobody can see him thru the fence.)

He is a one of kind that is for sure. His body condition makes me think he is old and probably has short teeth as it is really sandy here. Taking him this fall b4 it gets cold might be good for everyone.

Beautiful muley....out here mulies are bigger bodied , so more meat too.

I am free to say, that I like both. As much meat as I can get with one shot, and pretty antler art to FEAST the artist's appreciation for many years after the meat is consumed.

I would also like to take smaller or younger ones, but in this area one tag is all you get, or if you are picked for a "B" tag, which allows for a doe.

So, I appreciate both , and that is my freedom and right. wink

Make sense to me!
For the eastern slopes where it is so dry the buck with the typical rack is basically a fat calf. I cant explain the Antelope here but they get huge to I suspect they are eating cactus and prairie dogs when nobody is looking.

On antelope, I'm assuming their meat is as good depending on what they are eating ?

Years ago, friends went on a hunt east of the divide and gave me a bit of antelope , first time I've ever had any. It was muddy and horrible. The next year, the same folks got another one and begged me to try that one. I almost didn't. But that one tasted great. They said it depends on what they were grazing on for the past weeks.

I know deer, and of course domestic stock all are sweeter when they are feed certain grains and fruits just before butcher...

I have heard several times that if it gets too dry the goats eat sage they get gamey. The only one's I have been offered were great.

Yes Hoss, Ive heard that exact same thought, from the same friends who gave me the steaks .

I've always loved the smell of the wild sage , the ones that do have such a nice aroma, and like to stop and gather some boughs to dry in my truck , enjoying them on my trips.

I wondered how eating such nice smelling leaves could influence such bad tasting meat in antelope, unless the sage is a different type , or age...

That said, in mulie habitat, they often like areas of sagebrush and high plateau rocky places, or open rolling hills . I've wondered if that habitat makes them differ in eating compared to whitetail. A set of nice mulie antlers would go well in my collection too !

I have gone on exactly one antelope hunt...the one i killed tasted fine, but I've heard a lot of folks bad mouthing antelope meat...but...they go sour fast, especially cause the hunts are fairly early and still warm....get that thing skinned and cooled quickly and the taste will improve considerably. Everyone I spoke with that does that ,never complained of off tasting meat.

Thanks, Hoss , yes I bet they do ignore riders, just like almost stepping on ruffed grouse until they burst up in a whir right under your horse's nose ! grin

I would say they are on the wrong side of the fence to make them legal !
but we all know trophy hunters do not always follow the " fair chase rules"

The bottom deer has some fallow deer genes in it's system.

North of 50, I hadn't thought of that myself but now that you mention it he might!

Sharon, speaking of holding still, I have identified the best way to take a jack rabbit census. Just get on a skittish colt.

You will probably want another hand along to count the slope eared things because you might well have your hands full doing your best Billy Etbaur impression LOL
