Trying to stay on topic , but just swaying a bit , does anyone have specialty junkyards near them. I already saw a post on a tractor junkyard and one with mostly trucks.
We have one here , very tucked away in a couple towns over , nice neighborhood, no signs. Just a dirt driveway into the woods. Go down a bit away from the road and there is a decent sized building in the middle of a Subaru only junkyard. You would never know it was there unless someone took you there. There was also years ago was a motorcycle junkyard in a big building in an industrial area , but it is gone now.

When I was younger all I could afford were junkers. I was a regular at the local u-pull-it junk yard. Had a woman, probably 5' tall, who ran the place. I was in there all the time. One weekend I needed a steering gear. The car I was picking from was buried in the mud and I was really struggling to get the steering gear off of the frame.
The girl who ran the place saw me struggling, pulled up in her pickup with an oxy-acetylene torch in the back. She fired up the torch and cut off a chunk of the frame so I could get my steering gear out.

We had the WW II junk yards near us in NJ when I was a kid. From Elizabeth to Bayonne on Route US 1 was lined with tents and guys selling stuff that they bought by the lot. Several old fishing rods and coats and boots back packs etc came out of there. They were gone by '55 I guess. We used to rummage through the vehicles looking for ammo and bullet holes and old ration cans then get chased out by the owner who really did not care much as he was not real serious.......jk

I got 3 junkyards within 13 miles of where I am right now. They are not that big though. They rarely have the parts I need.

I was telling my son when I was 16-18 we went to a few junk yards , that had some little hatch back they would cut a hole in the roof and drop the oxy acetoin tanks right through the holes hook weld a rack on the car and wind up the hoses the had a tool box accessible through the hatch back.
the cars were often pieced together

Adam, the one junkyard gets crashed cars from an insurance place. They crash late model cars on purpose with a dummy in the driver's seat.

I spent a lot of my squandered youth digging through those SE Wisconsin Salvage Yards for auto parts, talking to the guys than ran them was the best , some real characters that a mental inventory of every car or truck on the site. Kieth Mitchells in mineral point was a good one, and I believe it was Scmitz in Middleton was a big one.

I spent a lot of time wandering through the old salvage yards in my youth. I'd go in for a specific part or two and come out with half a dozen items I didn't know I needed or wanted until i saw them.
Eh...wot?

Adam, the one junkyard gets crashed cars from an insurance place. They crash late model cars on purpose with a dummy in the driver's seat. Interesting. This place doesn't crush them. Most of the cars there are in decent shape but there's a lot that were totaled in one way or another. Several I saw had beer cans and bottles inside including the one that was crushing the car seat. I had to get out asap after that.

I've been out west as a kid and we drove past the airplane graveyard. Awesome place , would love to return there again. I'm always intrigued at video footage of it used in movies like Harley Davidson & The Marlboro man. I could spend days just walking around that place. Of course they won't let you , only guided tours.
Even seeing some of the 'mothball' fleets they had years ago are cool.
