I have no memory of hearing about this at the time, but in October of 1999 a fellow from Willoughby Hills, Ohio fell off an ore carrier in Lake Superior, 4+ miles from shore and lived! The waves were 6-8 foot at the time, the water temperature was in the mid 40's, and this guy swam to shore at Eagle Harbor. He apparently fell asleep for a bit when he made landfall, then went to a house for help. He was not wearing a life vest. How is it possible that this man could even stay on the surface with the pair of cast iron kahunas he must have been sporting?

No water out here. I would have panicked and drowned. I saw a show a few years ago about Bull sharks in the Mississippi. Scared the heck out of me and I’ve only seen the Mississippi once!!! No trees no water just have to worry about the neighbors bull out here. Lol

That don't happen near as much as they talk about. I've lived in Ks for just about 74 years, and have seen three tornados. Two the same dsy. Now if. you want to talk about thunder boomers, I've seen some doozys!

Four miles is a heck of a swim, and in those cold waters.....ya better be tough!

In my younger days I was a pretty good swimmer, mama made sure of that. I swam my river bank to bank many times, saw to it my two oldest girls could as well.
Four miles in hyperthermia water is a (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) of a thing no way I could in my best days.

The will to live is STRONG. When giving up means death, then you’ll find a way.

Anytime you step into Lake Superior your kahunas may disappear for a long time But there are many stories out there of folks who survived impossible conditions

I worked for Inland Steel in the mid '90's ,and sailed on both Lake Michigan and Superior at that time of year.I'm not saying this story isn't true, but it's very very hard to believe.

Buck.....you spend time on the Block or the Sykes. ??

I should mention—I didn’t sail but I loaded freighters out of Grand Haven mostly Algoma and ASC
The Sykes and the once in a while the Block are here unloading stone and slag
