I am having acute pain in one of my Achilles tendons. I normally walk stiff legged to avoid stretching it. This afternoon I decided to land my step on my heel and roll my foot in my stride. It felt better at first but is killing me now.

My wife ruptured one of hers ten years ago and I do not want to do that. Short of wearing a boot to prevent ankle rotation, what should I be doing? Anyone else had this problem?

Why do you say that? I can hardly walk for three months. I have tried exercises and stretching also. I am 74 years old. What are your recommendations. I will try them.

I STRONGLY recommend finding a Licensed Massage Therapist.

I thought they were new age touchy feely BS . Then I walked into one on crutches and walked out 2 hours later better than I had been in 20 years !

I'm lucky to have one right down the road from me. Massage therapist. He's a good one too. Charles, you could also
look for a rolfer. I like rolfers pretty good.

Some are not gifted with much empathy is all Charles. Love them anyway.
As someone who has had a near tear in his Achilles (spent 3 months in a boot and 3 more months hobbling like I still had one), you know from your wife's ordeal that this body part is slow healing. We just use it so much you can't help tweak it all the time.

I had PT and MT and I'd offer to start with the MT and see how that does. Both helped me as I was determined to get "back in action" asap. Good LMT are not found everywhere is the trick. Neither are good PT's either. I sifted though 2 not so good LMT before I found one that knew his stuff.

Blessings on the quest!
Mark

Thanks everyone. I had not thought about MT.

First you need an ultrasound of the tendon to see if it is rupturing. If so, sometimes it is casted until it heals. I'm doubtful a massage will fix a partially torn tendon. All that said, it's more likely to be tenosynovitis, and there are treatments for same
