“Western” and “eastern” are grade terms that actually have little to do with where the coyote actually came from. It has to do with color, clarity, heaviness, and length. Trapping on the plains of Montana, a place renowned for having high quality coyotes, I had some that graded “eastern”, and some from the east coast do grade as “western”.
Obviously there are more “western” in the West and “eastern” in the East, but where the pelt physically came from doesn’t factor in to the grade.

Why is a western coyote pelt worth more then an eastern ? Does that also go for fox ? No not for fox. Fox are equally worthless east or west, north or south.

I also feel that in many parts of the west coyotes stay less rubbed longer while being in more prime condition. Here in the east where a lot of coyote hunting area is brush, thickets, cattails, thorn bushes and other woody vegetation they lose guard hair quicker due to the environmental conditions more so then time of year. Also being larger they just interface with more of those impediments then the smaller western coyotes do.
Bryce Don't forget the fences. Though barb wire is getting close to extinct around here.
