Was reading a 1979 issue of Outdoor Life magazine. It talked about the 1979 Alaskan land grab and how they somehow used the Federal Antiquities Act to try to gain control of the land. It was millions of acres of land , and as I read the article, it said something to the effect that it would block hunting to 75 % of Sheep hunting in Alaska.

Did that get passed ??

No idea, but 75% of sheep hunting wasn't blocked.

Just doing what I want now.

Wow.... ya it happened ! Carter used the Antiquities Act to lock up 56 million acres in 17 new conservation units.
ANILCA came about in 1980 as a result. ANYONE in Alaska at the time will never forget Carter's action !
We are living with the results of Carter's action to this day.

It sure DID happen. First the withdrawal of millions of acres of land under the Antiquities Act and finally the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) in 1980.

That is how we got stuck with all these national parks. Hardly anyone visits them (except for the bits and pieces that are along the road system) but it cut out a ton of hunting and trapping.

And yes, sheep hunting was the hardest hit. Estimates vary, but ANILCA put somewhere between 50-75% of Alaska's sheep habitat "off-limits" to hunting.

My bad. Indeed, a huge portion of the Wrangal-St. Elias is off limits. Arguably some of the best sheep country in the state.

Just doing what I want now.
