Yep, Eric Treece.
No, I never sailed....but I loaded boats-Mostly Algoma and ASC. But you get to know the other docks and I would get on board and check things out.

I was lucky,I was working at a time where you had the up and coming, but still a lot of old timers yet.The most memorable time was one night when we were in a storm and I sat with a bunch of these old timers and listened to them talk about the night the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. They all knew the captain and.most of the crew, they had worked with him or under him in the past. They were all out on the lake that night on different ships, they were either anchored trying to ride the storm out or trying to get to cover. They told of hearing the Fitzgerald wasn't answering radio calls, and how everybody stayed awake waiting word that the Fitzgerald was found and all right.I'll never forget that night listening to the men that lived it.

I can’t even imagine that night..... a lot of the mates and captains I dealt with were always sure to take extra precautions this time of year. Wouldn’t pull away until all the hatches were on... and with the older LLT boats tarps on too....boom stowed... etc. A few were riding it out that night and told the same stories.

Can you imagine being in the safety of Whitefish and the Coast Guard asks if you can come out to help search ??? Not an easy one right there !!

I see the Sykes spent a lot of this season at the wall.

If you had favorable currents and winds it would be helpful. But that cold water is a killer.

No I can't fathom what that must have been like. One of the old timers said back then they were all cowboys, they had the best crew, their crew and ship could handle any weather, etc. The companies and the Coast Guard won't tolerate that anymore. The fact that they couldn't get any body to respond to that request to go looking for her tells you how bad it was(the Anderson,I believe, did eventually go out)

I’m sure if there was a tonnage bonus at the end of the season the crews and boats were a lot tougher. Now not so much..... plus look at the age of the American fleet now ..... not junk of course- but it is getting older.
How did the Sykes ride in hard weather ??

Sure can’t beat the sound of the old steamers.... very quiet

They ran a regular route then from Gulliver,Michigan, to East Chicago Indiana, with a couple of runs to Duluth on Superior. The next year I got out on the Adam E.Cornelius and our run was from Gulliver to Duluth.I didn't notice it riding rough so much, but maybe that's why they ran a primarily Lake Michigan run.

I remember the Cornelius.... she looked better in Inland colors if you ask me.
I thought they kept the Sykes on Michigan because of her size and the tonnage she carries. Perfect size for around here .
Heck, the Sykes and Ryerson are at the wall which means they are running a one ship fleet right now.
Cornelius is Canadian now—- Algoma Compass I think
