Anybody familiar w/ the stretch of road?

I'm heading to SD in a couple weeks and I'm considering this route.

Is it better than 212? What's the speed limit on 7? Are there many slowdowns for towns?

I'm driving my F250 w/ a truck camper, so I'm not looking to go real fast...fuel mileage is a killer over 70 mph.

Thanks!

212 is a better run.

Off the top of my head I believe 7 is a 60mph road. I'd have to agree with Al, 212 is probably better. Which one is shorter

I’d say its a horse a piece and dependent on weather. 212 is faster through the metro but goes down to 2 lane just west of Glencoe, and hits a bunch of little towns to slow down for, maybe even stop. It is generally pretty clear even when the snow flies. Once you hit the Renville county line the wind is a big factor. HWY 7 can be hit or miss in the metro, avoid it around morning and afternoon commutes and it’s pretty quick. There was a stretch of road where they had the eastbound lane detoured this summer, not sure if it still is. Once 7 clears the Waconia roundabout its generally pretty quick, and gets better past hutch. Straight, flat road and not many towns to slow for. 7 is known for not being well cleared when a storm hits. If weather was good and I was able to avoid the work commute I’d take 7. Bad weather, I’d take 212, I just hate slowing down for all the little towns west of Chaska.

IMO 7 usually seems a little faster, and generally the more enjoyable route. However, I am often tempted to take 212, just because I like to stop at Bongards for cheese and butter. And, unless I am confusing it with the Cady Cheese Factory, a great ice cream cone.

I'm coming from WI, so cheese and butter won't be a problem. grin

Thanks everyone! I'm probably going to try 7.
