Three sets out this week for some chicken eaters. My catfishing partner has the desire to learn trapping so I let him skin it out. He did a good job I will have it tanned so he can have a wall hanger. He is taking his online trappers ed this year but for now he will be trapping with me on a mentored license. Always fun to have a good friend in the field.

One skunk today was all I caught. This was bad but what made it worse was I saw a coyote on a farm that I have 5 sets on. I'll work tomorrow and getting as many sets back in order as I can. Really wet here.

50 years trapping and hopefully another 50 still to come. OK, let's hope for 15 more.

It is still sprinkling here at 10:30 AM Since Wednesday I have 3.25 inches in the rain gauge! Everything is really, really flooded here this morning. I have some sloughs I can canoe but everything else will be on hold for some time. The good news is when the water goes back down the sign will be fresh!!

My other rain gauge has 4 plus inches in it and a farmer about 20 miles from me stated he has a bit over 5 inches in his gauge! I saw two rats on the river the other day scouting. Today in my larger slough I did not see any but the rats must be social distancing as sign is on the light side!

Same here on rat huts social distancing on Lake Wausau. Most are on a private area only owner can trap as he owns lake bottom. Lots of battles in years past from trappers that didnt understand the law.....

My DP traps are currently under about 3' of water. Flooding along the river I trap.

It is going to be awhile before I can get them. Looks like the muskrat opener is "washed out" for me for a couple of days.

Strictly water rat trapping on flat water for me. Water is up but trappable. Set up one larger slough, and two smaller sloughs. In general sign was about normal for two and a bit up on a portion of one. Got 100 sets out and had a rat in my first set on one slough on the way out, so I am not skunked! I think I will hold off a week more to do any coons on purpose. I usually get 4-6 setting rats on the larger slough. Need to do more stretching exercises and shed a few lbs. Dragging canoes several yards and up hill at one is getting harder each year.

Well I found some rats to trap after all it wasnt looking to good for me haha
So the opening day operation went as usual but only could get about 100 some traps in this marsh on the way out I checked them all and got 30 then I went tonight and set the marsh I trapped last year thanks to this rain bringing it up still have alot more to set in it but got 50 some out and got 10 rats out of them so opening day ended up with an even 40

Set the same spot I've been hitting the last few years. Got 27 sets out yesterday, and the high water opened up some spots I couldn't get to before. Sign was better than last year, so hopes are high. Probably get a few more sets out today while I check, but I have to save a few to set with my daughter in the pond across the driveway from the house I'm renting this fall.

Had a double on wolves this morning, one pulled out as I drove up. Had to release this one.

Made it back from checking traps with my oldest daughter! Weather was tough as the surface was freezing while setting in the early morning. The competition was even tougher! Awesome to meet you John! You are a machine and a stand up guy too!
There was about 1/4" of ice while checking this morning. Tough getting around in the canoe. Overall a fun opening weekend, my daughter had fun too.
Nice pics to all!
Awesome wolf pic Steve!
Better temps to come midway through the week.
