I thought this was going to be a Cluster (you know what), hunting my son’s Lab and Son-in-Laws German Shorthair Pointer on Pheasants at the same time. Best of both worlds, watching two distinct breeds and styles at the same time. Credit to the training and handlers, I expected the Lab to blast in when the GSP was on point but he held tight and let him work. The Lab did make every retrieve and there was no stopping that lol. Awesome experience that we will repeat in the future.

The key to it is a rock solid "Hup!" (sit and stay until told to move).

Most plantations down here use English cockers for the retrieving, but there are a few that use Labs in the exact way you described.
Looks like an outstanding hunt!

I had a stray lab mix years ago that would point. Blew people's minds.

At one time in my youth, early 20's, I had a really nice Lab that had absolutely no interest in finding and flushing a bird but would retrieve anything from a starling to a bushel basket. What we used to call a non slip dog. He was perfectly happy to walk at heel all day long. I was then given a Weimaraner that had been neglected and abandoned. I got him back into shape and started to run him. To watch him hunt was pure sex in motion. Constantly quartering at about 30 yards, smooth and effortless. All he wanted to do was point could care less about a retrieve. Worked out well for me, the Weimaraner found and pointed the birds, I flushed and shot'em, the Lab brought every one of them back. It all worked out for me, two great dogs that got along and worked really well with one another. Dang I miss those two clowns.

Looks like a great combination, some great eating, and a great day to stomp around! I kind wish I had been there too

Tough thing for a pointing dog to work a bird that likes to run like a pheasant does. Leaning to relocate without busting birds takes time. Our grouse up here wear sneakers and like to run. Frustrating until the dog learns not to crowd its birds.

I had a lab and a brittany spaniel. The brittany would point a bird and the lab would notice the point and race in and flush the bird, plus retrieve it. You'd think a perfect combination. Not to be.

The brittany must have gotten tired of doing the locating while the lab got credit for the flush and retrieve. Finally, when the lab came back with the shot bird the brittany latched on to the bird and a tug of war ensued. By the time I could recover the bird, it was in shreds and the two dogs were in a nasty fight. They never got along after that.
