Took the two older out to do some dark house spearing for pike. The river has about 4 inches of ice on the edge and we were on a drop off in about 3 feet of water.

Decoy was sent to me by my dad in MN. Spear was my dad's and his dad's before that.

Let my oldest spear for the first time. Took her a few tries to get it, but she got her first!

Connected on my biggest speared. 39.25 inches. Been trying for years to break the 40 inch mark.

Starting them young. Great! Nice photos!

Good family time! I have an Eskimo shelter also. They are golden when there's a cold breeze blowing. Also golden when fishing crystal clear water in the daytime!

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

That is fantastic! Hopefully I get to go a few times this year. I haven’t poked a slimer in probably 20 years or close to it.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Awesome! That had to be fun for the daughter to watch (and you too!)

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

I was talking to my Alaskan grandsons the other night and they had speared a bunch of white fish and they were going to smoke them.

Thanks! My daughter is nine so I figured it was time. My dad started me around that age maybe younger.

I wish the water was more clear here. All summer the river is chocolate milk. It clears enough to spear this time of year.

Better be careful! It is addicting! I look forward to it all year.

Yes! It is basically a lure without any hooks that looks like a fish. It is wooden with metal fins and a lead weight embedded. I try not to let them but some come in like torpedoes. Some realize after grabbing it it that it is not what they want and don't come back.

What part of Alaska are they in? I heard some places they do quite well with the whitefish. Only pike, pike, and more pike here.

I thought about going today too. It was 2 degrees for a low and has been in the single digits for three to four nights, so I could find enough ice to hold me up. A floor in the house will help you see and cuts down on fish seeing you. A chunk of carpet would work. I have done a lot of it and speared when I was in Fairbanks.

Just put some hooks on the lure and use the spear thing to land them.
Nice pike and good eating out of the cold water.

MJM- Good advice! That is the way we did it growing up. My dad had some fish/dark houses that we left out all year with wooden floor and a stove. I guess all we were missing was the bunk and tv. Nice fish also! Do you ever spear Lake Sakakawea (spelling?)? My dad has pulled some lunkers out of there in the summer.

Boco- I think early winter pike are the best eating! We put away 7 quart bags of deboned fillets and the wife jarred a batch as well. It makes a good change up from salmon for fish chowder.

Very nice! I purchased a spear head but have not attached it to a pole yet. Alas, I would have to go a long ways to spear legally!
