Any you guys out there have a suggestion on a rifle for fox hunting. I currently have a 22-250 but found it just tears them apart. Any suggestions? I am really leaning toward a .17.

.22 Mag

But the 22 -250 with a good bonded bullet would not tear up fur

If all you're after is fox and not coyote, it doesn't take much to take them down. I've dispatched plenty in sets with a pellet gun. If calling at night a good tight choked shotgun will get the nod but daytime I would agree with a 17/22 mag. Here, day or night calling though ,they hang up a lot further away. Not so quick to want to rush in on a coyote. Might want to look at the fmj .223.

22 mag or 17 wmr. Have used both myself, prefer the 17 wmr. I also hunt coyote with a 22-250, have shot a few fox with it and yeah, alot of sewing.

I use the .22 mag with the Hornady or Remington V-max bullet. Good to about 120 yards and will take down a coyote also.
I have heard nothing but good results on the 17 WSM and if I could find a semi-auto at a reasonable price I would be using that.

22 mag or 17hmr will do the job but if your looking for a gun for the occasional yote to than the 222 is probably the best gun out there

I have a 17 WSM. Very fond of it.

12 gauge #2 birdshot. Killed tons of foxes . Spent years patterning and field testing LOL ... out to 70 yards nothing more deadly on a fox. Before you guys start throwing out different buckshot/ buffered loads been there tried that. Nothing tells more about what a shot size will kill than a piece of full news paper on the side of a barn. ALMOST any thing bigger and the pattern won't be dense enough to kill a fox OH it would kill but there are too many holes in the pattern that a fox could be completely escape. . BB's glide ,Don't have the knock down of lead. AS for rifle I used a 222 for years. But now days 223 seems to be hot. I also have a 22 mag but never shot a fox with it.

In the early 1960s, my brother, a friend and myself were one of the first group of people to night call fox in my part of Ohio. We could get reds into 30 to 35 yards and greys into about 20 yards or closer. We used full choke 12 ga. shotgun using 2 3/4, #4 shot. After others found out about it there were several others trying it. Of course there were no fancy electronic callers, only Burnham Bros. hand callers. Most of the other groups didn't practice with their callers and made horrendous noises trying to call and or just trying to shoot too far out. At this time the foxes started getting spooky and would lay up at about 50 to 60 yards out.

My brother bought a double barrel ( don't remember make) 10 ga. With gun we could kill them out to about 50 to 60 yards. We still used #4 shot and I think the shells were 3 or 3.5 inches. Don't remember that either.

We never had any fur shot up bad and I skin and stretched all of them.
