Just got a Mueller scope modelmapv451440 4.5-14x40ao . If I sight this gun in at 100 yards when set on 4.5 power will it hit in the same spot when turned up to 14 power at 100 yards? And on this scope there is a setting from 10 yards to-infinity. So if I have this setting on 100 yards sighted in will it hit the same place when set on 300 yards. Thanks Larry

All variable power scopes should hit same POI at any magnification setting. If they don't something is broken inside.

What does change, depending on focal plane, with magnification change is the subtension of the reticle. In second focal plane scopes the target grows larger while the reticle does not. In first focal plane scopes the the reticle subtension remains the same in relation to the target. If the scope has a reticle with range estimation or bullet drop features it is accurate at all powers in a first focal but only on one power setting, usually the highest, in second plane scopes.

The first question : it should, your just changing magnification. You may come into some problems if you do not adjust you objective view but not very noticeable at 100yd.
2nd. Again I'm pretty super that's just the focus. All that's doing is adjusting how crisp the image is in the scope. Shouldn't have any major affect on where the bullet lands there is some technical stuff that says other Wise but that's more ELR shooting)

Parallex, is what you're thinking of Wolfdog.

Scopes without parallex adjustment are set at one distance where everything lines up perfect. Usually around 150yds for a rifle, 50-75 for rimfire and shotgun scopes.

I have a couple of Mueller scopes and donít have an issue with either one. Sighted in at 100 they hit the same no matter the magnification.
Now your second question Iím confused about, lol. If sighted in for 100 then NO it will not hit bullseye at 300. I donít know of any scope or gun that will do that without holdover or turret adjustments. I might be misunderstanding your question.
There was a thread a while back where one of the members here went into great detail about scopes...extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

the 10-inifnity is a focus for your target if your shooting at 100 yards you place that at 100

the magnification changes how you see it but not where the retical points

there is one more adjustment on the rear eye piece most likely this is the focus for the retical it's self , turn it all the way in close eyes point at clear sky open eyes is it in focus , turn a half turn out , repeat fine where it gets better then worse you are only looking at the retical and you have less than 1 second to decide before your eyes will try and compensate on you so if undecided close your eyes and try again
go till it gets worse then go back in 1/4 turns and then fine tune

do you intend to shoot beyond 100 yards ?

if you intend to shoot beyond 100 yards it is a good idea to either sight in a little high at 100 about 2 inches is good

or start figuring out your hold overs and working on range estimation

then you need to see where you hit at 100,150 , 200 , 250 , 300 that all depends on the round , the gun , how high your sight is and a few other things

if you say sight in a 308 rifle to be 2 inches high at 100 yards it will be on to an inch low at 200 approximately much ot that has to do with how high your optic is mounted

now you are on for deer size game basically from 0 to 225 yards you then start needing to aim higher at 250 and beyond how much you need to figure out

Thanks guys On the 100 yards is on the parallax setting if I have this setting sighted in for 100 yards and then turn it up to the 300 yard setting and still shoot it at the 100 yard target will it still hit the same spot.? Just dont know what this setting does.I do know how much drop there is from 100 to 300 target. Shooting a 223 55gr.

Parallax is a measure of where the reticle aligns with both the target and your eye. The shift is more pronounced the further your eye is off dead center of the scope.
Parallax adjustment does not shift POI it shifts that slight alignment of eye/reticle/target. Generally this alignment is only important if your shooting dime sized groups at extreme range. Parallax adjustment is usually seen on scopes shot from the bench for record, sniping at small critters at distance and sometimes on two legged critters at distance.

If you put the gun on sandbags with the parallax adjustment at 100 and the target at 100 and look through the scope and move your head side to side and up and down the cross hairs will not move on the target. Change the parallax setting to 300 yards and repeat. With the gun stable and motionless the cross hairs will appear to move as you move your head. This is what parallax is all about. If the parallax is not set at the range you are shooting it can introduce error in the point of aim depending on how consistent your cheek weld is.

Thank you, much better explanation than I was stumbling through.

to give you an idea of the arch of a 55gr 223 this is from an AR so the scope height is 2.6 inches

0 at 25 yards
6" high at 100 yards
10" hight at 200 yards
6" high at 300 yards
4" low at 400 yards

a normal hunting zero would be 225 yards

0 at 50 yards
1" 1/2 high at 100
2" high at 150
1" high at 200
0 at 225
