I’m curious tonight-what is the record number of raccoons caught in the US during a normal fur season? I have to imagine it would be an Iowa/Illinois/Dakota trapper...

I can assure you its not a ND trapper. Coyotes are thicker than coon in 1/2 the state. I say Iowa.

I don’t rightly remember the exact number but it was a bunch, I skinned most of them. It was insane, I was buying 500 or more a day from that one county

plus for sure. 2000 has been done by more than a couple guys in Iowa over the years.

It's mind boggling to me how much effort and determination it takes to get those type of numbers. \

I've heard the same from reputable sources that a certain someone has done over 4k. Are his Initials MA shane?

I have out three dogproof and caught two 28 pounders and today in a 160 a 22.5 female. That's it. I set on sat the 24th opener, There is just not any coon sign. Forgot two possum and one skunk. Missed four coyote's that messed with my sets, one you could see it rolled on the hay set. I had with me plenty of DP's and 160's I only got five 160's out that's how bad it is in MN. I put on around forty miles a day and now with the snow the coon might hole up till it's gone later this week. Wish I had better news!

Would be interesting to know how many of the 2000 coon plus trappers put up their own fur. Sure would be more difficult to obtain the high numbers and put up all the fur. Not to mention all the incidental fur caught while pursuing coon.

To me knowing the number from each state would be more valuable. I am sure that states or some agency has a ball park figure of what the coon numbers from each state during the high dollar years of the fur boom in the late 70s and early 80s. I thought I saw a post years ago that indicated over two million in one season for the US but don't know if that was just those at auctions or if it was a total estimate or number. I have seen some figures that had WI at near or over 200K during some high harvest years but I would estimate that states like IA, MO, etc. would exceed those numbers by a lot.

I don't think any state dnr would have any idea how many coon are taken in a year

Agreed. MN DNR would have to care in order to know.
