There is a "no kill" zone on a deer...it just ISN'T "above the lungs and below the spine" as is commonly said. There is no "void" between the bottom of the spine and the top of the lungs...that is the old wives tale portion of this phenomenon. There is, however, an area below the top of the deer's back and the TOP of the spinal column that if shot will almost always in the animal not dying. So there is a "void" of sorts, but it isn't below the spine, it is above it.

Right at the shoulder, there is nearly 5"+ of "zone" that is above the spine. This will often result in a decent blood trail that peters out though and often the deer makes a full recovery. If one persists in saying that there is a "no kill zone" below the spine and above the lungs I would politely ask them to post a picture of it...they will not be able to do so though, as it does not exist physiologically.

GEEZ JP !! The wound was on the under side of the deer. He opened his mouth , aged the deer, took a knife and cut thru the corner of each side of his mouth . He then pulled straight back at a 90 angle on his head. Made another cut which exposed his brain stem and took a sample. Then he made another cut and got tissue from its neck . Next he said he needed the liver and that's when he turned it over and the wound was noticed. I never touched it. When he finished he called the game warden and told him he was giving me the head and gave my name and phone number.
Pretty interesting to watch my tax dollars at work !!!!

Oh this thread confirms a ton !!!! Mostly about some on here and what kind of personality they have. I never expressed my opinion where or if it was above/ below the spine. I just stated that a person can hit a deer and think it's a kill shot but not recover the deer.

Where in this thread did you say that?

Also if you believe there is a “no kill zone” on a deer this thread doesn’t prove it. That deer is dead right?

jbird, you have to check your keyboard. It seems you punctuation keys stick a lot.

Either that or you need to go back to prom.

It sounds like it would have eventually died had you not shot it. Therefore, it was in fact, a killing shot.

Eh...wot?

Which "No Kill Zone"?

There are hundreds of places where you can hit a deer that will not result in a dead deer.

But the one place I have heard referred to as the void or no kill zone is as I described in my earlier post and the post of seiowatrapper. And in the rib cage below the spine is not a void or no kill zone. That deer will die! Whether the hunter has the skill and patience to find it is another subject all together.

JBYRD63 ( with "some" respect), you really need to quit being a know_it_all.

Just about EVERY single thing you post has holes in it a blind man walk through..
Then you try and sugar coat it later.

So WHAT WAS the intent of this thread?. What did it confirm?

I'm not understanding why JBYRD63 is taking such a beating. This was an interesting, informative and educational post. Even if there were some misunderstandings I don't recall him being rude or condescending.
