What started out as a morning turkey hunt ended up being my very first male hooded maganser duck. What a beauty.

Definitely one of my favorite birds.... not on the table, but to look at. A roomate in college had one mounted and I always liked it.

The one you shot is a perfect mature bird. A mount of him standing on a piece of driftwood would be very cool.

The young brook trout of Maine thank you.

Pete

It's true that Hoodies are not the greatest table fare, but I've eaten them and, in my opinion, they're not all that bad.

Beautiful specimen, certainly worthy of the taxidermy treatment

Back when I hunted ducks regularly on Lake St Clair I could have filled a sea can with dead hoodies if I had cared to shoot them LOL. Now I may regret never taking one for the wall and I hope you'll post pics of the mount when it's complete.

They seem to show up here once the weather gets (and stays) really cold and nasty near the end of season and they never leave unless the Detroit River freezes solid... they are definitely a cold tolerant bird around here.

Just happy to be here.

I regret not mounting the cool ducks i have shot. I have taken a few hooded mergansers and a lot of wood ducks one canvas back and a few very pretty American wigeons, u have got the blue and green wind teal but not a cinnamon teal yet. Ijust never could find a good duck taxidermy to take them to.
Hope yours turns out real great.

I wish I had mounted the ones I shot. I had them in my cousins freezer before his divorce.

That’s the most truthful answer I’ve ever read on eating a Merg. We train our dogs with them, if they’ll pick up a Merganser, they’ll pick up anything.

They don’t count towards our limit of ducks, but still tell anyone I take, if you shoot it then you mount it. I don’t know of anyone that is desperate enough to shoot them just to eat them.
