Am interested in what you all think of the Savage Model 42 22 long rifle over 410? Pros/cons are appreciated.

One particular question Id have is could a peep sight be installed on the rear? I have a hard time seeing the rear v but can shoot quite well using a rear peep.

Or should I hold out for a Savage Model 24 instead? I see their barrel is 24 instead of the 20 barrel on the newer model 42.

Thanks all!

I'd probably buy one if they where $200 and not $500. The extractor block is cheesy, the sights are thick and plastic. They are tough and there is a break down model that fits in a bag. If I needed a gun to store under the seat of my truck I'd consider it. If it's a gun you're going to hunt small game with get the Model 24 if you can find one without a crazy price tag.

Might be a better option and brand new for same price as a beat up 24. I have several 24's and always looking for more. Lots of people bash them but darn sure won't sell you one! Who would've thought a new 24 was less than $300 in the day and now used and rare for $800.

Friend of mine had a savage over under in 223/12 gauge. The idea was coyote calling versatility. He had a scope for a sight with a see thru mount. I watched him shoot at a coyote about 200 yards away. Beaded down on it and touched one off. Had the selector in the wrong position. Shotgun barrel was loaded with 3 inch #4 buck. Cracked him pretty good with the scope. Cut his eyebrow, left a bruise. I was laughing to hard to take a shot at the now running coyote. He never shot it again. Sold it taking a loss for the now used rifle.

I have my dads model 24, .22/.410. I have the receipt with it. My mom bought it for him in the mid 60s for an anniversary present. $37.50. Wouldnt that be nice ???

I like the two triggers.

Here's a couple of mine. I also have a few of the Baikal combos. All of these clubs I've owned have been excellent shooters. [Linked Image]

That's a painful truth. I've owned a couple of them over the years and let them go. I'm pretty sure I paid $200 for them individually and now you're lucky to find one for under $600.

I have one and I regret buying it. The .410 patterns horrible past about 20 feet. If they had a screw in choke for it then it would be alright. I bought it for squirrels and to keep in the truck but the .410 is worthless.

If you want a new over under, I would recommend the chiappa double badger. Less expensive than the savage 42, better quality, in my opinion.

Was really thinking about having the 410/22 combo because I have no shotgun for rabbits, grouse and such. I have a Winchester Model 62 22 that shoots shorts, longs and long rifle so don't really need another 22. Just thought the combo gun even if it is a single shot might be a good idea.

Since I have a very good, useable 22 should I buy a shotgun instead? Where I currently live there are lots of squirrels, a fair number of rabbits, but am not sure about grouse. Never was a duck hunter.

The Chiappa Double Badger is heavy, the extractors have issues, and I cannot hit a pie sized plate at 40 yards consistently with the sights they have on it. I was hoping for a good back pack gun but I wont be packing it anywhere. It does do a fair job behind the back door

I would think for a survival type gun, as far as ammo availability goes, a .22lr over 12ga would be the easiest gun to feed when/if times get tough.

I love my double badger-carry it on the trapline for small game meat and dispatch if ever necessary.I made a leather moosehide gunsock for it when folded,so easy to carry and quickly available off the 4 wheeler.
Shoot it several times every day I am out on the line potting grouse.
The choke pattern is nice and tight for a shorter barreled gun.
The peepsight is great for the shotgun, not so good for the 22 mag for me.If I shot the 22 more I'm sure it would be fine, just not used to peep sights on a rifle.
I have shot a couple of beaver with it.

Buy a pump 12 gauge.

Looks like a great set up

Curious what is the caliber of your rifles. Make and power of scope

Lots of .20 ga. available and when Trump wins it'll be even more. Kelly if you really want a nice fun and cool looking gun, I'd highly suggest a SxS 20, specifically I like the CZ Bobwhite G2. They can be had for around $600 and you'll have a gun worth passing on to the next few generations. Fun to shoot, dependable and nostalgic look everyone loves.

I'd shoot that Jayme! I've never had a side by side but it's on my list
