Nice Pickerell Hutchy. Not a lot of guys know the best fishing is in october, especially for the big ones. I've been taking limits of eaters(15-18") and been releasing many mid to high 20s walleye's in the past 2 weeks on my local river, in my area the fishing gets prime time right now but this year cool water came early. Hopefully I can keep going thru Thanksgiving. Nice pic Hutchy

I totally agree with you down here on Fort Peck Lake a lot of fish that size can be caught in the fish traps our fish wildlife and parks biologists set those big girls are loaded down with eggs and as you said the small males are all over the place .
We're you pulling crank baits or pitching jigs ?

Fish went back.
You mention eaters and keepers.....the mighty biologists have given us a slot limit. Anything between 16 and 22 inches has to go back. You can keep them over and under. Their reasoning is that the middle sized fish spawn, and the big ones don't.
Complete nonsense. You look at a a river spawning run and you see two things. Huge females and a billion small males. Exactly opposite their theory on slot limits.
The biologists haven't a clue We have goofy limits like that too. I can only keep 3 walleye and only 1 can be over 14". Seriously....14 inches!

Lol. 14 and 15" fish, may as well be perch fishing. Good thing the smallmouth are easy to catch this time of year.

Nice big clean healthy looking fish! The shield area walleyes have such a distinct look and color to them.We get such a green color walleye from Lake Winnipeg/Red River. Gorgeous fish! A few lakes near here have blue walleye in them

Hutchy, Does everyone in your area call them walleye? The guys that I know in the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario area all call them pickerel. No, everyone calls them pickerel and they are dead wrong. Walleye belong to the same family as sauger, and pickerel resemble pike, and we don't have pickerel here. Pickerel subspecies include chain pickerel, and grass pickerel and one more I can't recall.

Exactly right Hutchy. Walleye and sauger are in the perch family (percidae). Pike, pickerel and muskie are members of the Esocidae family. Is redfin pickerel the one you are trying to remember?

Pickerel is the Canadian name for Yellow Pickerel. The American "walleye"name came from those catering to American tourists and the resulting articles in Magazines around the 1980's. Real Canadians still call Yellow Pickerel- Pickerel. The French also have it correct and call them Dore which translates to golden pickerel.

It’s okay Boco. You and the rest of the “real” Canadians just go ahead and keep calling various species of fish by you’re cute, colloquial names. The rest of us will continue to call them by their actual, proper names.

If a carp is a minnow, and walleyes are pickerel, What's a pickerel then? Nice one Hutch, the 500 inch thing bruised my brain cell lol. My biggest is 28, Erie, mounted it in friends smoker. The slots seem strange but the catchin looks fun.

We pay taxes for our free health care services. And every one in the country is entitled to IT .And yes walleyes are yellow pickerel. I don't care if people call them that, we all know what fish they are talking about, let's just not pretend its the actual name of the fish in question. Right-just like your new name for the wolf-lycaeon. Yellow pickerel is the name.I dont pay attention to the pseudoscientists.

It’s a regional nickname you “real” Canadians have for a fish that the rest of the world calls something else. Take a chill pill Bobo, a Canadian calling a walleye a walleye is not going to erode your culture. SMH

Man, those things are golden compared to our green and white ones around here.
I don't know if anyone has said it, but in lots of formal scientific journal articles, the common name(s) for a critter isn't even used. Its just the taxonomic name. For that fish, it would be Sander vitreus. I'm not a biologist, and in most of my articles where I've had to give a tree or critter name, they are usually lax enough to do both the scientific and most commonly accepted name, but in more strict biology journals often its only the scientific name.
"And God said, Let us make man in our image and let them have dominion and all the creatures that move along the ground". Genesis 1:26

Do you get scared fishing in the dark Hutchy?
I was fishing from a dock one night and couldn’t tell when my hook was coming close. Freaked me out every time it hit the tip of my rod lol.
Cold as ice!

Pretty big water here, but all my trapline checks on this line happen after work and take four or five hours. Only when snowshoeing miles out in the dark and the wolves start howling 200 yards away does the hair stand up on my neck a bit. But I usually just yell at them and tell em to shut up and they go away. Lol

Ya, these ones are real golden. Have a lake inland with some blue ones too. This homo sapien thanks you for your comment. (Normally i wouldn't identify as homo-anything, but I am making an exception)

Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

If you kill a walleye over 24 inches in Washington or Oregon, you will be treated like a leper!! Guaranteed!! Here the only fish you can keep have to be over 22". We always aim for 23, but put them back over 25. I don't make the rules cat daddy, I just follow them. Lol. You can also keep them under 16", but we never get them that small.

Amazing the quality of the fishery and your skills. The consistency of catching really trophy fish is something for sure. Big females must be feeding heavily getting ready for the energy to form eggs and spawn.
Bryce I keep one fish each time I go out. Of the ones 22-24", slightly more than half are female. The rest male, obviously.
