I have trees that have most their leaves on them yet. I have four apple trees that have most their leaves. Some cottonwood have a good amount and elm. Some of both have dropped all their leaves. It has been down in the single digits at night half a dozen times. The wind is blowing 30 mph + today and the leaves are still holding. The apple tree leaves have a green tint to them. Anyone seen this and know what's up? Will the apple trees die off this winter? It has been real dry here all summer and fall.

we still have a lot of leaves here to. It hasn't been that cold yet though. A cpl or few lighter frosts is all. Lots of rain and wind though.

I know I will be happy when they do fall, for no other reason than to get my dog in the woods more. Hard to find a grey squirrel with so many leaves on.

Have noticed the same with my apple trees. Dry here also but trees have had plenty water from irrigation through the summer. Have had plenty cold nights to get the job done. ??

I’ve noticed the same thing here, and we’re had a few frost. Wonder if it’s like fur becoming prime, length of day, rather than temp, determines when they’re ready.

A few days ago I could walk on the sloughs. It was in the single digits four days in a row. The coldest I have seen was 2 above. It has warmed back up now and is opening them up. I had snow on he ground for two weeks at least. It is not a lack of cold and wind. Some trees have dropped all their leaves, some have most. It isn't the type of tree that makes the difference. I have a cottonwood that has some branches bare and some still leave covered. Big branches. The tree is big enough you could not reach around it. It is like there is no pattern to it.

It's the same here, Mark. I've seen this happen before, and no harm to them. I think what happens is when it gets cold early, the leaves get frozen, but still have enough moisture in them that they stay on better than having several frosts like we usually do in the fall. That lets the leaves dry more and turn loose sooner. All my trees around the place have leaves still attatched, except the ashes, and they lost theirs in sept like they normally do. The leaves on my trees are all gree yet too!

"Winds NW at 25 to 40 mph. Winds could occasionally gust over 50 mph." I think I may have had a gust over 60, but the leave are not letting go.

Think Lee must have something. Our first frosts were early and hard, then warmed back up.

Another thing that enters in is a lot of times it'll frost, but the coldest air is close to the ground, so the trees may not get burned . Just depends on how deep the cold lays on the ground. I learned a lot about frost when I started growing grapes. If it is a hillside, the cold air slides down the grade to the lowest level. It's weird, almost flows like a liquid!

Lee, It's pretty flat and some of the apples trees are pretty short/young. I am guessing part of the reason I notice it, and wonder is because my apple trees are involved. I haul water to them and usually about the time they start to produce they seem to die for one reason or another. I agree with the cold following the low ground. I have rode the ATV and snow machine, both where you could feel the temperature change as you changed elevation. It does not take much. When you can feel the difference through Carhartt coveralls, with a beaver hat and mitts on, it is changing a fair amount. I trapped on some benches in AK and every time you got up another level it was warmer. I am just hoping the apples pull through. It looks odd that everything is brown and some trees have 90+ % of their leaves.

What’s this frost thing y’all speak of, lol? All our trees have leaves and will until about December or maybe January.

Same is happened up here with apple trees holding their leaves.
We have had a drought since 15 June with sparse rains.
You have to look at the apex buds and see how much they are developed, they should be 3-5 mm is size
if not the tree has hardened off and these buds are not formed, it also contains next springs flower buds, so you may not get any next spring.

It also depends where the graft came from as well, moving 2 degrees latitude is enough to throw the fall chronology off. With these big operations creates problems down the road because of this.

Color was striking this year with lots of deep colors but was short as we have had a lot of windy days and the 4-6 inches of rain and wind took a lot of the leaves off as well.

Same here, ash trees gave them up but everything else is holding on pretty tight. Don’t have many apple tries but the Bradford pear trees still got all their leaves. Maples should be next but they are barley turning

330-Trapper our forecast read "Winds NW at 25 to 40 mph. Winds could occasionally gust over 50 mph." I will bet we had gusts over 60 mph. But 60 is over 50. It was 12 this morning, but only show a 18 mph wind today. Very few leaves fell in yesterdays wind. I will bet they will still be on the trees come spring.

Yes that was quite a strong system, and now the northern vortex is here.
Did any of you guys see my leaves blow by ?

I would need a NE wind to see anything out of Manitoba blowing by. I am just west of straight south of the Manitoba / Saskatchewan border and 55 miles south.
