Any secret to getting them to consider the danger and act responsibly? Cousins' daughter had a bad accident a few weeks back.....she lived, but has a fractured skull. My sisters kids and grandkids come to the farm......and machines only have two speeds.......dead stop and wide open. Wheelies, donuts, etc. All part of the fun.....until it isn't. In one case, adult as bad as the kids.

Aside from letting them learn the hard way, what can you do?

When used as a toy and not a tool , it's full gear or doesn't get ridden in my book

4 wheelers crush adults.I would never let a kid drive one unsupervised.

If they can't follow the rules you set then they aren't mature enough or responsible enough for the machine. My daughter is 11 and she NEVER presses the rules I set for her. I watch her like a hawk and she still has fun riding responsibly.

all atv have size suggestion for appropriate age groups. Helmets should be required at all times also.

I use one, and I agree with anti gov. Use it more of a tool than a toy. Responsibility is a big part of it. It’s not uncommon to hear of people having accidents on them. One kid on my road was going way faster than he should have, lost control and hit a telephone pole. Another guy I know was doing donuts on loose stone, he didn’t get killed but it hurt him pretty bad. A few years back, there was a kid riding at night without lights on, and he hit a mailbox flying down the road. Use it responsibly, and be as safe as possible. I always go slow, always have my lights, etc. When used responsibly, they are a great tool. I’d have a very hard time trapping without one. Used irresponsibly, they can kill you.

I don't have one myself, but if I did, I'd be the same way. Low and slow......and a yes, a great tool for it's purpose.

But what I'm talking about are the irresponsible.......and they are not my kids, but family members. Long history of one kid....now an adult with kids. He is as bad as any. And these are his machines.

I would have thought seeing the girl getting her skull bashed in and fighting for life in an ICU for 3 days might have slowed things down, but apparently not.

Take the DNR class and don't let them ride until they pass it. After they pass it, let them know the rules. They break the rules they don't get to ride.

IMO if they can’t ride responsibly they can’t ride at all.

Take the batteries out and turn the fuel tank selector to off if it has one. Then print out a stack of 5 of all the atv deaths from people doing stupid stuff and make them read it before riding again.

I'm not sure which is worst. The parent who doesn't set rules or the parent who does and then doesn't enforce them.

Have a buddy paralyzed from the waist down, another fractured his skull and smashed up a shoulder. Young people just do not consider the danger they put themselves in. As much as it sucks to say, not your kids, not your problem.

These days since they're his equipment it could be his butt paying for it...

unfortunatly it takes some of them getting hurt to realize

this is not isolated to atv

some kids need to roll a truck to find out they can't act stupid with a 6500 pound tool

Not your kids and not your machines. Nothing you can do. Unless you own the property. Then you could tell them if they don't drive normal then they can not bring them to your place.

Its amazing how me and my buddys are still alive. We have done more stupid things then anyone should. I never thought about all the danger till my daughter got older and I remembered how I was. Still was some of the best times of my life though.

Humans are not born with a sense of fear, we learn this, some reasonably quickly, others need to be taught by example, either a picture or some one having a bad experience ! Most still feel apathy and invincible, hmm like many adults !!

If your not supervising young ones on such things, is it the fault totally theirs ? If they are taught reason and safety and still mess up, lets hope the learning curve is not a door of passing to the other side !!

I grew up on motorcycles and 4 wheelers. Raced dirt bikes and road raced. The most dangerous thing i did was ride on the street. I dont ride anymore because i dont really have time and racing is expensive. My son has a bike and 4 wheeler and im not going to get him into racing. But he has all the gear and doesnt ride without it.
Kids can get hurt doing anything if they are not supervised and instructed. It will make them a better car driver. Ever watch someone that never rode a motorized vehicle try to drive a car down the road for the 1st time?
Get them the correct gear and let them have fun. Or give them a video game and let them sit inside. Im not a big fan of side by sides. People get in them and dont wear a seatbelt because they have a cage around them. Then roll and get ran over. I hear a lot of stories about that.

Thats what kills people on 4 wheelers too they wind up underneath them.
A guy here drowned a couple years ago,4 wheeler flipped and pinned his head in an 8 inch puddle.

If it's your farm it's your rules. You can't get a solution much simpler than that.
