I believe that Oregon relocated otter to both Iowa and New Mexico.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

Years ago WI and MO swapped wild turkeys for otters. I don't know the type of traps used. I do know that Steve Gappa from MN caught otters for either research projects or relocation, don't know for sure and he used double long spring 11s for that project. I don't know if he chose those traps or if those were the traps that were issued.

I know Mike Fischer was heavily involved in the MO otter program. Seems as they were trapping them for tagging purposes. He used No. 11 double long springs in that study.

I don't know of any otter NC has ever received from another state. We have a very healthy population. In the mid 80's we caught coastal otters and bought some from locals trappers so we could reintroduce them to the mountains. We would hold them for several weeks and then haul them to the release sites and stock several waterways at once.
We tried several types of traps and sizes. Keeping the animal healthy and in good shape was an obvious priority. We tried a rubber jaw 1 with a spring. It would not hold consistently. The DLS 11 worked the best. Two traps at a dirt hole set worked best for our program. The bigger traps caught better but their weight and a fighting otter would strain their joints. The otter were in better shape with the smaller traps.

Trapping turkeys was a lot more fun. Otter hard hard to handle trying to keep both of you safe. We shot rocket nets over turkeys. We traded for turkeys mainly from Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and quite a few were NC birds. Tried to keep coastal birds on the coast and Piedmont and Mountains birds in similar habitat that they came from.

In my “former life” I had a trap just as described and that was the story I was told about them too. I have long since thrown out any documentation I would have had about it but maybe Caven’s have some records from back at the start of Bridget.

I have nothing clever to put here.

i didnt keep the old TRAPPER magazines either, but they ran an article called "they otter be in iowa" about the relocation program there. some otter came from mississippi, and those were trapped with 11's. a buddy was holding one in a small cage/carrier in the entry way of his house, waiting for it to be picked up. it got loose and buried down into his wifes clothes hamper. they had a hard time getting a choke stick on it and returning it to the cage. wife wasnt happy. would t&pc maybe have an archive on past articles that might help?
