I just ran across a new Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in my favorite caliber, 30/06. As you may recall from an earlier thread, I just purchased a new Bergara Hunter in .308, so I have no real "need" for this rifle. But I've always wanted one, and would have bought this rather than the Bergara, had I found it sooner. Anybody out there have experience/opinions on newly manufactured Winchester Model 70s? I believe they are now assembled in Portugal. Thanks.

I am a Winchester fan generally, but not the new ones. I'd pass on it

White 17, what is it that you don't like about the new Winchesters? In other words, what has changed for the worst?

While I have a serious soft spot for "mountain guns" reality tells me two things from experience. I can't shoot muzzle light rifles off anything other than a bench with any sort of distant accuracy and snap shooting is a wasted bullet for me. The other is that recoil is a thing and a little extra weight helps.
I shoot better if my rifles have a little bit more mass out front.

If I must have lightweight I shoot lever carbines better than lightweight bolts.

Heavier rifle points nicer, guys that shoot prone using a bag as a rest and a range finder might like the light weights though. Also id go with a pre 64. Or at least one that wasn't made in Portugal..

A lightweight rifle like that in 30-06 is a thing of beauty right up until the moment you pull the trigger.

Depends on what the price is.

For the money, I'd check out the Browning X-bolt. I picked up a Medallion maple (I like wood stocks) a couple years back. Free-floated barrel. Glass-bedded action. Excellent craftsmanship. Weighs only 6.5 pounds. About $1,000.

I have a Pre 64 Featherweight in .264 win mag and it's a pretty sweet set up. I have a couple std weight in other configurations. By far prefer the pre 64 guns, but the latter year models are decent shooters.. I've owned a couple that i've been happy with, but have always let them slip on down the road it seems. Just not the same cache as the pre 64 guns. FWIW

Just my opinion but the newer guns seem "chintzy". The metal seems more 'plastic' than the older guns.

I also agree with others that recoil in a gun that light is going to be felt more than in a heavier gun.

Another point on recoil.

Some would say that a hunting gun is carried alot and shot once so weight takes precedence over recoil. To a point this is true as I rarely feel recoil when shooting at fur or feather. However, shooting just once does not make one a consistently accurate shooter it's those dozens if not hundreds of shots in practice that makes the one shot count. I definitely feel the recoil of those. If steps aren't taken to moderate that abuse nasty subconscious things can ruin the effectiveness of that one shot.

I'll admit it, I have in the past struggled with recoil induced flinch. It ain't pretty. I blame it on an early, to early, introduction to the 12ga.

My son had a model 70 featherweight in 270. It was a fine rifle. I shoot left handed and LH Winchesters are hard to find so I dont own any. I am a huge fan of controlled feed guns, which the Winchester is. Feeding and ejection is much more reliable in this type of action. I just ordered a lightweight Montana rifle that is nothing more than a Winchester clone. One other thing to consider is value. Winchesters hold their value better than any other rifle by a long shot.
