My wife had a small eye infection so we got to get out of our confinement at the farm for a day and come back to town. We far prefer to be at the farm for all of this but it's nice to check the mail, etc.

We've had some decent hunting for the migratory pigeons, and gotten some work done, and had some good lunches outside. Found a few mushrooms to boot but not a banner year for them.




Some of you in the west have seen bandtail pigeons, but they are a big bird. They migrate from Scandanavia and Siberia through France to winter in Spain, North Africa and Portugal. Very sporty shooting as they are fast and after the first shot the whole group goes haywire. Second and third shots are tough. Makes shooting mallards in Alberta like a cakewalk.
Here's one with one of the small birds we shoot as well. The small ones are called grives and they taste great. About the size of a late hatch dove.


Anyway, glad to have the computer for a day instead of the cell phone to look at Trapperman.

Beautiful pictures. In American English, grives are called thrushes. The American robin is in the thrush family, Turdidae. The European robin is in another family. I have always thought American robins look like they would be good to eat. How do the grives taste?

The horse and the donkeys just stand around without chairs. They are very spoiled but we made them that way.

Danny... yes, it is a treasure for me. I bought it last year at an auction. It is a Belgian 9 pin sidelock made just after the war that was part of a pair. It was shot but well cared for. Mod and full, so perfect for pass shooting the pigeons. I wouldn't dream of a refinish because it has so much good wear. The pairs were for driven pheasant and partridge shooting but many pairs were split up amongst the family after the death of a father.

KeithC... yes, the same bird. They migrate through us by the millions and they taste great. Around us they typically keep the pigeons and the smaller birds and make a dish with the birds cooked in red wine and onions for hours. I never liked it that much. We eat them the same day on the BBQ after a 15 minute marinade of soy sauce, rosemary, garlic, beer and dijon mustard and cooked rare. Every single hunting friend who has eaten them that way has never gone back to the old recipe. Several neighbors prefer the small birds to the pigeons.
