It has become abundantly clear to me over the last few years just how different the two populations of the U.S. are and by that I mean rural vs. urban. Unfortunately, the greater number of people being brought up these days seem to all be leaning urban. I took an old prison lieutenant out with me on the line one day that I'd met while doing medical. He told me he'd recently encountered a young inmate from Omaha and the first day out on the yard he asked "what's that big black thing out there? It's huge." He was flabbergasted that the inmate didn't know what a cow was. He said you've got to be kidding me and he said the inmate had that honestly dumbfounded look on his face like he wasn't kidding. He explained to the lieutenant he grew up in Omaha, never left the city, and had never seen a cow in person.

I thought that had to be an isolated deal and there was no way someone could be that isolated from the rest of the world. Then I came across an article at the beginning of this month that found 33% of youth aged 11-24 years have never seen a cow in person. 1 in 3. That's amazing. This world is doomed.

Not seeing or working a cow would also limit ones vocabulary.

Sure but they make up for that with their music.

Wade I’ve been saying for years we need to stop the foreign exchange program out here and start bringing city kids instead. The loss of our rural heritage and the disconnect between city and flyover country is crippling this nation.

I just ran into a guy that is just shy of 60yo. He had no knowledge whatsoever about giant coastal redwoods and Sequoia trees.
He had never heard of them or even seen a picture of them.
I told him about the trees and he just looked flabbergasted. I started to pull up pictures on my phone and showed him , he had no idea they existed.
Yes , he grew up in a VERY densely populated area.

I met an 18 yr old kid that thought a baby was born out the butt. They are out there.
A lot of money could be made by bringing city kids and adults to the hills to a retreat and showing them how real life works. I've always thought a branding on a ranch would be a good thing but the first thing you would get into is animal cruelty so that wouldn't work.

That explains people saying "I'm very anal about this or that."

According to the census bureau, the US is only 3% urban by land area, but 80% of people live in urban areas. That's pretty crazy.
My wife grew up in the suburbs of chicago, and had never seen a cow except at the zoo (yes, they have a cow at the zoo there) until she moved out here. Her aunt was shocked to learn that all that corn growing in the fields wasn't sweet corn. She had no idea.

Pretty much only our self to blame as if you grew up rural most parents wanted their kids to get an education and sent them off to college so they never returned to work the famiily farm, etc. but got a 'career' instead which meant their work was in a city somewhere.

Other's like me after high school couldn't find a job in the rural area i grew up in so migrated to a larger town/city for a better way of life. Granted those of us rooted in the rural ways kept our 'country' ways even when we moved to the city but the kids of all of those who migrated have been raised on concrete and asphalt, wear helmets to ride a bike, get ran to the doctor everytime they sneeze, coddled beyond the norm and grew up pretty much pampered and ignorant of how anything works.

Only going to get worse as time goes by.

Stacy Abrahams is one of those. She said and I quote " No one should have to make a living farming in Georgia " There is after all plenty of food on the shelves at Wally World. And dimwits like that get to " help " running the country. The city folks don't realize that without the people in the country they would be Hungry, naked and sober every day. But for them hamburgers just " happen" they are just there and have no idea where they com from. I still think that we should stop feeding them for a little while to make them appreciate the other side of the fence.

Maybe schools should have field trips to farm country to see the real deal.

Without them city people would you have been able to make a living as a boat mechanic?

Rural areas furnish cities with raw resources, The cities manufacture and produce products from these raw resources. Its a very symbiotic relationship.

Lee your Death Ray and your knives are some of the best products out there hands down but do you think you would be able to produce those without finished products coming from cities?
