It’s rarity makes it a status symbol for the ultra rich. Other than that it is intrinsically worthless, just like diamonds.

It’s rarity makes it a status symbol for the ultra rich. Other than that it is intrinsically worthless, just like diamonds. Diamonds have physical properties that gives them vale for utilitarian purposes. Their hardness certainly make them valuable for a number of uses.

I stand corrected, they are not completely worthless, but there isn’t a diamond in the world worth more than a couple hundred dollars for its utilitarian value. Anything above that is because diamond dealers are really good salesmen.

Diamonds are the ultimate in marketing genius. If you read up on the history of them and the De’beers(or however they spell it) it’s interesting. At one point they were complete junk and thrown out.

Why is gold worth so much? Gold has some practical uses outside of jewelry. Plus it's a universal currency. You can now get debit cards that use gold as it's currency.
