A decoy dog will not only distract a coyote from you but will also lure them within rifle range. Fun to watch a good one/pair at work. There is some good ones on YouTube

How do they distract and lure? Does the coyote think they are competition or a meal?

Never done it with coyotes but have watched it with ducks.
A Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever. Brought a whole flotilla of Pintails almost to the shoreline. I can see where market hunters would have used them

Coyotes hate other canine in their territory. Their boldness is the greatest in denning season.

I have a good friend that has decoy dogs. It really is a fascinating style and concept.

We used alot during spring and early summer. Coyotes become super aggressive at those times and the coyotes will come off the den to chase them. We had better luck with medium size dogs like aussies etc. A good dog will bring them out to you.
