I can alway see a snare mark on our coons in Pa. You have to set entanglement free, so everything is always alive.

Interesting to watch, just did the first guys so far, the ones that had 50 coon in the grease and a number of them snared. From the camera angle, I thought there were 3 "piles" but the "low" pile must have been broken in two in the end. My count was 2 in the "high" pile- "4x", 18 in the "middle" pile that was called "3x" and 30 in the "low" pile--"2x" and "damaged", "yellow" (all snared coon went into this pile).

The buyer said at the end, "2 at $10" (so I got the "high" pile right), "16 at $6" (so 2 of the "3x" migrated to the "lower" pile), "22 at $3 and 10 at $1" (so the "low pile got split basically in a 2:1 ratio, with a couple of adds from the "3x" pile). The total was $192 for 50 coon for a $3.84 average. Ok, it was earlier stuff and if a guy had a skinning machine and spent almost no time after dispatch/removing from set on the animal, maybe its some cheap entertainment with a little cash flow back to them.

P.S. How much extra value do you think they would have been paid for putting the fur up, maybe $2 a skin for the nicer ones, a buck for the low piles??

P.S.S. Do you think any of these green skin selling guys do anything with some of the nicer skulls, baculum, or have a "meat" market on the side...? I suppose those extra values have a much more limited market or interest in doing by most rat wagon sellers.

Grade the bellys and the backs will be there. In other words if the belly is good the back is good .

GUK.....it's the sound they make when they hit the end of the cable

Kind of hard to grade the belly when they are put up. I've sold coon for almost 50 years to many different buyers, 25 of those years green skins. never had a buyer grade by the looks of the belly.

teepee2- What do you think typically a "country" buyer (can GFW be considered a country buyer anymore...?) will add to their price if a coon is put, even wih these early coon?

Buyers, all buyers not just Groney, are going to use every little thing they can see on a pelt to down grade it in this market. Probably be docking people for too few rings on the tails soon. frown

Exactly Jayme. Few tick bites on the neck of a finished Coon gets it dropped a size or two. Would never even see that or some of the other scars if it was in the grease or round. Looked like finished added $1.50 maybe but then whacked for slate and scares probably end up about net.

Really a pretty good lot of coon skins. Groeney not going to hurt any on that bunch of 50.

The put up 34 coon averaged $4.97 compared to $3.80 for the 50 in the grease. Assuming similar area and similar catch dates it looks like a $1.00 to $1.25 for a run of coon with the good, bad and ugly. He did get $16 on one coon put up so if one had only very, very good large coons there may be a benefit. If I had a run of average WI coon for my area that were all early to mid-November I would sell in the grease to GFW. They have the machinery to flesh coons so fast that buying in the grease may be preferred and they offer something for the work but not what it may be worth in time and equipment to a trapper.

I'll bet you If that guy would have come to the rat wagon with 80 rats the price would have been a lot different.
On Dec 5th I'll let you know how It goes.

A lot of work for less than minimum wage. Unless you think gas and time are free.

Yeah, bblwi, I don't think GFW really wants to buy put up in coon. Cramps their style and their pocket book a bit more...

Grease coon lots ranged from 3.84 (two sets exactly that) to about $5.40. Rats running close to $3 averages with some lots below and some above. It would be hard for me to get those averages with my coons as I don't have that baseline for color. Size and grade would be similar, but also more north centrals and fewer western northerns as well.

I would rather skin and put up rats for $3 than coon. Leftover rat is bait, coon not so much.

Low prices for north central coon, for sure. That being said, I think Groenys doing all he can do considering the market. He has more than he is paying in expenses dont forget. My best coon here in Pa are probably their worst. WOW......

Impossible situation created whereby millions of Coon pelts sold at pennies on the dollar in storage and we trappers keep loading the wagon with more. Heck most of us would be financially better off to just send Groeny a check and not set a trap. Oh but it sure is fun.
Would two seasons of 0 Coon brought to the market flush the warehoused goods out?

I thought groney wasn't buying carcass coon.
